Nine die as Tuticorin Sterlite Copper protest turns violent

Nine people have died in clashes with police in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu amid protests against a copper smelter that residents say is causing environmental damage.

The protests against the Sterlite Copper subsidiary of the Vedanta conglomerate have been going on for months in the port city of Tuticorin.

Police say clashes broke out as a huge crowd of protesters stormed district government headquarters.

Many others are critically injured.

Police said that the crowd had begun throwing stones at police and office buildings, overturned cars and set several vehicles on fire.



Vedanta has denied all the allegations against it and says it plans to double the capacity of the plant. The company has not commented on Tuesday's violence.

Locals have been protesting against Vedanta’s plans to expand the smelter, run by its Sterlite Copper unit. Last month, the state pollution control board had shot down a request to renew permission for operating the plant.

Vedanta Resources Plc's Thootukudi copper smelter, one of India's biggest, will remain shut until at least June 6, a lawyer petitioning against the plant reopening said on Thursday.

The smelter, which can produce 400,000 tonnes of copper cathode a year, is run by Vedanta's Sterlite Copper unit, which is controlled by Vedanta Ltd, a majority-owned subsidiary of London-listed Vedanta. The plant has been shut since March 27, when it was closed as part of a 15-day scheduled maintenance.

Vedanta says the protests are based on "false allegations" and the company has been providing "regular information through various media on the truth".

Sold 10k in 2lots of 5 average 783 purchased at aver 682 so happy with that. Still got a nice holding so will watch with interest rest of week. I’m hoping for a breakout to possibly buy back in but also if drops a lot will purchase aswell

No science to base this on, but with oil and metal prices looking good this must be close to a surge through 1000p. Looks left behind versus it's peers and other oil related stocks.
