I have no doubt profiteering is taking place across so many goods.

Just a few points

Some own brands have risen in percentage terms in line with some branded goods. We know eggs and oils have risen hugely. Hellman’s main ingredients eggs and oil.
Some products have had huge import cost rises Yes some rises are just profiteering but not others.on rice which is mentioned it’s well reported that India reduced and in some instants stopped rice exports in 2022.

Don’t be to harsh on all . We use U Dove soap and it’s price has hardly moved

Ordinarily Matt I would agree with you, in an inflationary environment these should be ideal as they should be able to increase prices in line with inflation and as a result make more money and grow earnings as per the 80s and 90s these were easy money makers, however this time they have increased prices way above inflation for greed, the volumes are already falling even though sales aren’t because the price rises are greater than the volume loss but all of a sudden those price rises will lead to a sharp drop in volume, they must be already having trouble with rice, I’ll give two more examples, overnight Bens long grain rice went from £1 to £1.25, I use a packet a day for the dog, I decided to try the own brands myself as well as to give them to the dog, Asda 38p, Tesco and Aldi 35p, Asdas was the best in my opinion, the dog wouldn’t even eat the Tesco one, the Aldi was ok, now recently that price has dropped back down to £1, but I now buy the Asda one and will not go back to the Bens rice, if they had left it at £1 or even moved to £1.05 or £1.10 in line with inflation I would still be buying them today but the 25% overnight increase was greed. Now they have lost 365 packs of that one line per year off me if you say they sell them for 80p to the retailer that’s £292 per year off one customer, imagine a million customers doing the same or two or three million, they won’t be able to take a large drop in volumes as the factories are designed for large volumes to be profitable, it will be interesting to see in a year or two how bad these errors have been, sadly the Tesco CEO hit it on the nail the other day.

The above is a valid argument and in part it was why I sold out late last year.

However I am buying back in again as I do think if we see a wider market sell off then a traditional safe haven like this may be a place many remember to come to. Risky and if I get a quick profit I may take it.

Unilever is a “company with improving quality,” according to analysts at Deutsche Bank, although they have cut their target price for the FTSE 100-listed consumer products giant to 4,400p from 4,500p, albeit while keeping a ‘buy’ rating on the stock.

The Deutsche Bank analysts noted that although Unilever is showing improvements in commercialisation and innovation as seen as its investor day, they still felt it necessary to make “small reductions” to their margin forecast for the company.

The forecasts were cut due to higher investment, tax, interest and further foreign exchange movements, they added.

Looking forward, the analysts said that "there will likely be focus on the company guidance of moderate margin improvement within their multi-year financial framework.”

Credit Suisse 4,800, Deutsche Bank 4,400, average 4,600 I'll take that target for 2023.
