Warbaby, if the PTB gave a flying monkey's what the great unwashed think, we would not be being governed by laws created in secret by unelected EU Commissioners, would have a selective immigration policy, would have grammar schools etc etc. Anyway.

The Germans are realising the potential shortcomings of dispensing with coal fired power stations - they have 'binding legal obligations' to do:

I doubt that even if the lights go out the public would be able to sway the direction of governance, 'legally binding international obligations' and all. It wont touch Cameron's class.

An EU wide opinion survey in 2011 indicated that only Poles were more favourably inclined towards coal than us, with 54% of Brits expressing a positive view of coal as an energy source. Indeed, perhaps the only amusing part of the recent Results RNS was to see Jonson Cox fulminating against UK Government energy policy while at the same time not being prepared to spend a brass farthing on taking coal's very convincing case to the British voting public to apply pressure to our London LibDem government.

P8 of the 2011 Results: "If 32s is not capable of being safely recovered and mined, it is possible that Daw Mill may have a face gap of up to three months during the first half of 2013, although mitigating plans are being put in place as a precaution." It is quite possible therefore, that these redundancies are part of the "mitigating plans" to diminish the financial impact on UKC of yet another lengthy D Mill face gap.

The other part of the D Mill context is that they were already mining 10km from the shaft bottom in 2010 and that development of an auxiliary shaft was always going to be needed round about now if D Mill was to be economically mined in the longer term. Given that the cost of such development would be likely to be of the order of £100m and given the combined record of the geology and workforce there over recent years, hands up all those in favour of chucking another £100m down Daw Mill even in the most unlikely event of a company in UKC's still parlous condition being able to raise such a sum.

It would seem quite possible, therefore, that this shrinking of the workforce signals the abandonment of development of the mine beyond 2013.

The Board believes that there is potential value to be realised from our substantial brownfield property portfolio through the development process. It is proposed that the property company would take over the bank debt of the Group and an agreed liability as part of a compromise of the pension scheme. Our proposal is that equity funding, which will be ring fenced to the property business, will need to be raised for the period of time required to pay down bank debt whilst the development process releases this value.

If the restructuring plan is successfully implemented in the interest of securing a more stable platform for the Company, shareholders may face dilution of their holdings.

The Company has entered into a collaborative and constructive process with its principal banking partner, Lloyds Banking Group, and is exploring the options available to address the funding requirements of the Group in light of the possible structural changes. The Company is confident that renewed facilities to 31 December 2013 will be agreed with Lloyds Banking Group, who remain supportive of the current process.
