I think only you can decide what to invest in Slasher but I am happy to list a few things for you to look at. These are all good longer term investments imo 3 - 5 years but strong Returns on equity, assets and capital, low debt, good margins, good products, good management etc. In no particular order I'd suggest looking at: ANGL, ALBK, CRH, TSCO, ABC, SFR, SGI, LTC and 2 smaller comps for a good 6 month - year punt try WGB & GNG. The first 4 are large, solid comps but good to buy on dips. The second, much smaller ( re market cap ) 4 have got excellent fundies - order their reports and start researching ( or just use the news button at the top of this page ). :O)

Look like UDG paid 6 times PBT for Analytical which was loss making ( obviously UDG think they can turn it around using cross selling deals etc ): http://www.independent.ie/business/irish/united-drug-pays-up-to-836421m-for-lab-equipment-firm-jva-1246370.html United Drug pays up to €21m for lab equipment firm JVA By John Mulligan Friday December 14 2007 Pharmaceutical wholesaler and distributor United Drug has paid up to €21m to acquire a Dublin-based laboratory equipment provider, JVA Analytical. The deal marks another bolt-on purchase for United Drug, which has spent around €74m on acquisitions in the past 14 months. United Drug said it had paid €16.5m in cash for JVA, while a further payment of up to €4.5m is payable, dependent on targets being met over the next two years. JVA employs 19 people and supplies laboratory instruments, consumables, services and other supplies across the country. In the 12 months to the end of May 2006, JVA posted a gross profit of €3.47m, but recorded an operating loss of over €23,000. The company is owned by John Ryan and Gerry Grady. Last month United Drug paid an up-front cash consideration of almost €6m (£4.2m) to buy Yorkshire-based Procon Conferences. The UK firm provides corporate event management services for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry. United Drug chief executive Liam FitzGerald said that JVA Analytical will form an "important part" of the company's medical and scientific division. In November, United Drug said its full-year 2006 pre-tax profits rose 15pc to €62.3m, while turnover at the group, which distributes medical and pharmaceutical products to over 1,200 pharmacies and 200 hospitals in Ireland, climbed 8pc to €1.58bn. United Drug has a €200m war chest to fund acquisitions, and has not ruled out making a further purchase. - John Mulligan

Looking from a divi perspective UDG might be cheap and due up a run soon. The highest number of FY scrips I received ( from my original purchase ) was in 2003 ( Interim scrips have been the same or thereabouts all the way through ). The lowest number of FY scrips was the following year in 2004, followed by 2005, then 2006 and finally 2007. It is important to note that the 2007 FY scrips are only slightly below that of the number of 2003 FY scrips and the company was way undervalued then. Perhaps we can expect a nice little run up in share price sometime during 2008. We can call this 'The Divi Theory'. ;o)

I just realised that my divi payment will have doubled this year from when I first bought in. I will collect more than twice the payment than from my original payment though because I have been collecting the scrip divis. :O)

A 341,545 O trade sell and no movement in price. I thought that it would be matched by now. Interesting that it isn't imo. If it isn't matched by the end of the day then I would assume that someone is collecting a bit of stock ( a big bit ).

Indeed. Looking nice today JohnnyAD. I just wonder how vulnerable UDG is to a takeover these days. Personally I hope that they can slog it out in the Irish market for many more years as a independant company.

OK thanks culchi, I guess that clears your question up then. The bad news though is that this price increase over the last few days will impact the scrip price. :O(

Hi culchi - regarding your UDG scrip divi question on the Anglo thread. I am not entirely sure of the answer for UDG but I suspect that the price used would be the closing price of last Friday. We will have to wait and see though. I am keeping my fingers crossed that what I think is right though as the price seems to have risen over the last few days.

With a decrease in the multiple these are fairly valued at the moment imo but you have to think that with a return of at least 15% year on year ( from both EPS growth and divi ) then the shares should be valued at a multiple of 15 if not higher therefore a fairer valuation would be just under 4 Euro per share. Of course if they do 10% growth over the next 20 years ( which is possible given the aging expanding population and the fact that price controls will not always be in place ) then 1,000 Euro will turn into 6,727.50 Euro. Obviously that figure will increase much more if you take advantage of the Scrip divi. So on that basis I think that they are a strong buy. :O)

http://www.dolmenstockbrokers.ie/reports/21%20Nov%2007.pdf Take a look at this. Dolmen used have a target of 4.40 on UDG. They now have 3.80 target as they say the recent rerating of Irish shares means they must decrease there target to a 15 multiple instead of an 18 multiple. This is rubbish but i suppose they are right in the short term. If we were in a bull mkt with these reults and being stuck in a narrow range they would have upgraded there long held target of 4.40 to say 4.60 im sure which 18 times the 08 eps consensus. I think when the mkt changes then we will see upgrades from the very wise brokers and this can hit 5 very quickly. For instance UDG only has 20% Debt to equity ratio. It said in indo 2day they would be comfortable with 50-70% gearing. I am comfortable with 15% eps for next year no prob. This gives foward EPS of 26.5 at 18 times is price of 480. What do you honestly think these are worth Liars??

I agree with the above post. I held GNG & WCC earlier both sold for a nice profit. Back in GNG as we speak though - results tomorrow. Agreed with UDG being a worthwhile part of the portfolio - does exactly what it says on the tin. 10 - 15% grow year on year - takes about 5 years to double in value. Just buy, sit back, relax and collect the Scrips imo. :O)

thanks liars. o/t i noticed you bought a small holding in sfr. I am also watching this stock since it was highlighted earlier this year. I looked at it again this morning but decided to go with sgi.which as you know ,i had on my radar. I hope to add sfr to my portfolio in the coming months(price permitting)when some funds become available from cnm which is the subject of a takeover . This has been a winner for me, held for past three years and resisted temptation to sell(bought at 45 pence) . It, together with bur. ,gng, and wcc have proved most successful this year. As you know, i bought kingspan at 17 euro , much too early. The irish stocks have taken a hammering and will take some time to recover even ang. which should report good results next week. udg share price has disappointed over the past eighteen months, but it has excellent management and seems to be moving into a higher margin business. Long term its a worthwhile part of a portfolio.
