parrett, while I think about it, thank you for your hard work this week standing in for croc. Haven't been posting much the last few days, so sorry for not acknowledging your effort before. Fine job in difficult circumstances at times.

Not sure at the moment ruth. I think it's slightly under 20 LSE, and mid twenties US. But I'm sure someone else will help us with that.

Dificult question to answer - depends on liquidity, option price and spread on share and time remaining. For an option on ARM Dec 390 put currently 22 @ 25. I nearly always buy them in conjunction with sold plays, spread then less of an issue.

The options which expired today are on the indices, FTSE, DAX, DOW etc, you are right the equity options expire on Friday. When I went on the Advfn options course one of the things they advised to watch was the amount of open interest at a particular strike to indicate where the biggest positions are. So I have been watching these to see if and how they get manipulated at expiry. I am no expert but if the big players tend to sell options then on TSCO they would want it to expire at 2.40 for maximum profit on the puts and not above 2.60 on the calls so maybe that is why we are seeing it holding the 2.40 level ???

ruth, notional measure of the time it would take to earn back the cost of the share based on the companies earnings, historic or projected. Therefore one measure of the relative cheapness or otherwise of the stock. Only of any use when comparing Co's in the same sector IMHO.

Tim,

How wide are the spreads on individual share options?

ruth,
that's right. Another way of looking at it is that if a company has a p/e of 10, then if it paid all it's earnings out as dividends and if you buy some shares today then you would get all your money paid back in 10 years.

ruth I expect if it does go through 420 the move will be quite violent - there must be a lot of stops there.

can someone briefly tell me whar relevance the p/e has on a stock, does it mean roughly that if a stock is say a p/e of 10 if someone wanted to buy them out they have to pay 10 years worth of profit for the company,or am i totally barking up the wrong tree

LLucky : re your earlier comment . Option deadline on 21st and several shares like TSCO and RTO trading at or close to critical exercise level. Are they manipulated down ?? How do you read it ?
