Mr Jo Hilton started out as a Rolls-Royce apprentice where he spent two years “designing bombs and missiles.” We must make him a Director!!! As bomb and missiles are fashionable. --Before Kim--issile--invites him.

Thanks to Sir Dyson who won his case that vacuums should perform well in the real world and not in EU labs. Well done Sue Dyson. Put the EU in their places.

I also read somewhere that the 'real world' tests which the UK is actually going to do in the real world, are in Europe going to be carried out in test laboratories! I suppose this rather sums up the differences between the UK and the Eurocrats, to us the real world is the actual real world, whilst Euroland has some other concept of what is real?

Thank goodness some KERS devices are actually going into some real world vehicles. But I think they would be most useful in vans, those things that operate in cities and are forever stopping and pulling away again! Although I suppose the HGV's can gather energy on down gradients and feed it back again.

edit, OA that's from an article dated 2-3-17 and is electric kers, using capacitors, I hope no truckies get zapped!

How many shares has Lewis Hamilton got in Flybrid? Finger on the pulse/foot on the peddle! Imperial College London, said: “There has been a rising awareness and growing number of drivers switching to hybrid and all-electric vehicles. However, the freight industry still relies heavily on diesel combustion engines. It’s vital that we find commercially viable options for the industry that are affordable and have the potential to dramatically reduce the amount of carbon dioxide and air pollutants emitted on our roads. That is why this project is so important.”

The trial will involve the installation of a Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) on 20 heavy goods vehicles used by Sainsbury’s and Howdens to deliver their goods to their stores across the UK.

KERS is used in motorsports such as Formula One Racing and in the World Endurance Championships. Versions of the technology are also used in cars such as the Toyota Prius.

A new emissions testing regime for petrol and diesel vehicles comes into force from Friday (1 September) for models registered in the UK, replacing lab-testing for new cars.

The testing requirements, which will mimic ‘real-lifeR17; driving conditions, have been brought in to prevent manufacturers from cheating emissions tests in response to the Volkswagen emissions scandal.

Emissions testing will be conducted on the road, from Friday

According to the Department for Transport, the new standards represent the biggest overhaul of emissions rules ‘in a generation’.

Under the old test, vehicles were tested in the lab on a rolling road but now they will have a 90-minute real world driving test.

During the 90-minute test vehicles will have emissions testing equipment attached to the exhaust pipe, and they must pass before they are approved to go on sale in Britain.
Conditions

The vehicle will have to do roughly equal splits of town, countryside and motorway driving, DfT has said. The test will then be rolled out for all new cars on sale in Britain from 1 September 2019.

Transport Minister Paul Maynard said: “We are taking strong action to clean up our air and these tough new emissions standards will reduce dangerous pollutants.

“This government has led the way in Europe pushing for on-road emissions tests, alongside a tough new laboratory test, to clean up air in our towns and cities.

“This will ensure all vehicles meet rigorous standards when driven on our roads – and we are going even further tightening requirements again in 2020.”

OA, where's the simple efficient engine that runs at constant revs and torque with an ivt to take care of the speed requirements? But lets not bother with a truly clean diesel engine, lets just game the emmissions tests!! I notice some luckless engineer has been made the scapegoat, of course the directors would know nothing whatsoever of what was going on!

Then somebody will pick up the IP for pennies and pretty soon afterwards there will be vehicles using ivt. Quite interesting that Royal Mail are happy to splurge money on electric vans for applications up to 100 miles a day. I notice at Royal Mail depots that their light van fleets are parked up at night, so plenty of time for charging them up. But having been in one of their depots a while back I noticed they had switched from electric forklifts, to bottled gas ice forklifts. Turned out the forklifts are in near constant use, this took a lot of capital investment, in more forklifts to have enough to provide constant availability, and quite a large internal building with extractor fans to charge all the battery packs.

So it looks like RM might run a few lecky vans for 'green' window dressing in a couple of major cities, it will be interesting to see how it works out. But if they are happy to lay out a lot of money on lecky vans, surely they could try a few vans with ivt?

Yes it does look like it's all over, another bit of British ingenuity ignored by the inept but greedy donkeys that waste our taxes.

I see £8.1 million is being thrown at the lorry convoy experiment. Whoever sold HM Gov this pointless exercise should be hired by TRK to sell stuff that works in the real world. I can only suppose that whoever was persuaded to authorise this either has no grasp of the UK transport industry, or is some jobsworth who had a 'green' budget that had to be used up. I suppose one has to be seen to be doing something, even though it plainly isn't going to be value for money.

Mild hybrids are a step down from conventional full hybrid cars. Generally unable to power the car through electric power alone, the electric motor is instead used to assist the petrol on startup and when accelerating. Under braking, the motor reverses, providing a regenerative effect and recharging the car's battery. This kind of hybrid system can even be paired with a manual gearbox and is similar to the KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) used in Formula One. The future might see greater scope for the electric propulsion system in the performance hatchback as well. Alternative performance enhancements, like the kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) technology, will be employed.According to Stratistics MRC, the Global Automotive Flywheel Market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.3% from 2016 to 2023. Rising adoption of Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) and Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT), increase in penetration of dual-mass flywheel, rising demand for automated transmission systems in developing countries and growing research on substitute materials are the factors driving the market growth. However, rising sales of electric vehicles is hampering the automotive flywheel market. Increasing research on emerging technologies such as Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) and continuous energy storage in vehicles are some of the major trends prevailing in the market.

No, Musk actually put a product on the road, he didn't run around cap in hand saying, "please sir, please sir, please try our widget, it works perfectly". "Clear orf you impudent lackey's we have lots of clever wheezes and stuff of our own" said the fat car bludger.

Had they early on put an ivt into a trannie van with fuel consumption read outs along the side panels, TRK might have got noticed, but alas the management were employee types, did well for themselves but miserably failed their employer. They might as well have been civil servants, indeed the first one was an ex civil servant and enjoyed spending other peoples money without fear of personal loss.

Given the current scandal of widely fiddled pollution figures one would have thought that real world solutions would be sought after, but no it's all stupid politics as usual. Even those Boris buses are filthier than previous older types, but it's all ok because they have the magic word "Hybrid" and "Electric" in there! Come to think of it why has there not been an expose' of those buses?

The growth in delivery vans continues apace due to the rise of internet shopping, and also due to the tougher regulations on vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross. With the prospect of self driving vehicles getting closer, then who cares what the driving experience is like? No one is going to be driving it anyway, and if they set up auto-boxes to behave like those currently installed on the latest HGV's, then we are going to see a lot of vehicles accelerating at a snails pace, in desperate attempts to improve air quality and fuel consumption.
