07/10/2024 21:56 | The cable was about 35 years old. Must be about then when I rewired the house. It was only sticky and yucky inside the immersion heater cover. It is the heat which has aged it. You will probably find yours is starting to decay as well, but if the electrician has wired correctly the wires should all be spaced out so shorts cannot occur. What is odd is mine had gone all sticky and soft, usually I see the rubber hardening and becoming brittle ....very strange. Wiring lasts about 50 to 70 years generally. The recommendation is to rewire every 25 to 40 years and have it inspected every 10 years ( who does that!!!). Landlords recommended to have it inspected every 5 years but these recommendations are there to make sure any damage to the wiring is found and to bring up to the latest safety standards. | jonjonck
07/10/2024 18:48 | Yes I get that, in my mind I would like to go part time when the day comes although a colleague who has done just that has warned me they won't reduce your workload and you end up still doing a full time job, actually I can imagine that is true | 2gekko
07/10/2024 18:05 | lol. If and when one is retired the brain and body does seem to get rewired. | rovi70
07/10/2024 17:45 | I had a good day, saved four grand of the companies hard earned, not that I get any thanks for it, interesting about cables, surely they last many years otherwise you would have to rewire your house and I've only ever seen very old houses get rewired It took me three attempts to get the word rewired, it kept auto spelling retired, do you think it's trying to tell me something | 2gekko
07/10/2024 16:14 | JJ. How old was the cable. Not looked at mine as there are about three duvets wrapped around tank. Fitted about Twenty four years ago. How long do cables last. | rovi70
