Top Mediterranean Cruise Destinations

LONDON, December 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

When you think of cruise destinations, you automatically think of the Mediterranean - and rightly so. The vast sea has hundreds of top class destinations all within easy reach of each other. Whether it's history, culture, shopping, food or style - the Mediterranean has it all.

No matter how many times you go on a Mediterranean cruise you will never get to stop in all the ports. So here's some inspiration for your dream cruise for next summer with our pick of the best destinations:

Istanbul

Istanbul is a city on the edge of east and west. The result is a fascinating city drawing influences from many different cultures. If it's history you're after then this destination has it by the bucket load.

Tourists flock to the stunning Blue Mosque - and rightly so. Be sure to check out the frantic and colourful market places and excellent museums too.

Many cruise liners go to Istanbul, with Celebrity Constellation offering great value for money.

Naples

Naples is home to one of the most iconic and famous meals in the world - the pizza. And while it is cliché to say so, their pizzas are like no other.

The city's National Archaeological Museum is also a must for history buffs with the largest collection of Roman artefacts in the world. Just walking round the museum's many rooms you cannot help but be transported back to the time of Emperors and Gladiators.

Nearby, Pompeii - the city preserved for thousands of years by volcanic ash, is also worth a visit. Hundreds of buildings remain with many of its inhabitants still in the same position as when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD79.

Norwegian Jade is one of many cruise liners that visit Naples. Fans of Broadway-style entertainment and good food flock to this ship for its quality services.

Barcelona

Barcelona is the city all other cities want to be. It has great food, great culture, great sport, great sights and great weather.

Art fans are spoilt for choice with world-class galleries scattered throughout the city. If sport is more your thing then Camp Nou is a worthwhile addition to your itinerary. Across town are the remains from the 1992 Olympics with iconic venues such as the diving pool available to look around.

Best of all, the food is stunning with tapas bars on every corner. Royal Caribbean International's Independence Of The Seas, makes regular trips here and has won a reputation as one of the most awe-inspiring liners in the world with its multi-floored restaurant, stunning leisure facilities and great service.
