Tesco Removes Plastic Wrapping on Tinned Food Multipacks

Tesco PLC (TSCO.LN) said Friday that it will no longer sell plastic-wrapped multipacks of tinned food starting in early March, contributing to its goal of removing 1 billion pieces of plastics from its own brands by the end of 2020.

The British grocer said it sells around 183,000 tinned multipacks every day and that the move will eliminate some 67 million pieces of plastic.

Last year, Tesco told its 1,500 suppliers that it would consider the amount of plastic used in packaging when selecting products for its stores.

"We are removing all unnecessary and non-recyclable plastic from Tesco," said Dave Lewis, chief executive at the grocer, in prepared remarks.

The change will also affect non-Tesco brands such as Green Giant sweetcorn, John West tuna and Heinz beans and soups.

"While we know we have more to do, this initiative is good news for the environment," said Georgiana de Noronha, president of Kraft Heinz Co. (KHC) Northern Europe, in prepared remarks.
