"Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones. I work part-time, I get Universal Credit, but it's still a worry when you think how much the gas and electric is going up and I just don't think this Government is living in the real world. I would love them to have my wages for a month, and for me to have theirs. Because they would never come here," she says.

Alison says she is coping but can't stop thinking about what lies ahead.

Buy backs seem to have been put on hold. I assume we will get an RNS when they have completed the program.

If only it was that easy. I ran a village shop for sixteen years, judging what the fickle customers would want each day was, and I'm sure still is, a right pain.

You can run a shop with so much stock that all of this stock is not sold so has to be either discounted or often just thrown away.

The major supermarkets in Spain seem to run perfectly OK running this way and why at the end of the day they have very, very little discounted because have to be sold by the end of that day.

It's not wasted it's sold off at a discount to staff and any left over is given to the food bank collectors................. who, in my locality, share it around their own friends and families.
Understocking, especially staple foods, will kill off a business quicker that anything, .

Better to run out of bakery stock early then having to waste so much of it.

You have to bake more than your average daily sale ,you dont want to go out of stock early.

You might want to check out an app called Olio. In Geordieland, Tesco make a boatload of free, short-dated food available, & that may be the same across the country. They seem to make far more bakery products in particular than they can sell. Or perhaps the high prices to which loganair refers to are the issue

Over my last few shops, in my experience unless buying via a Club card offer, Tesco's in now by far the most expensive supermarket, even more so than Waitrose.

Yes, it does seem to be done in some sort of dark box which leaves suspicions about skimming.
For example, if they sold in the a.m at a higher price, they could buy back lower in the p.m and then do the actual trade.

I think if, as predicted, staple wheat items like bread and pasta, are going to go up by 50%, then the earlier note that the Aldi and Lidl shops are competing with food banks will become even more real.

Difficult times.

To shop at all three I would have to travel, nearest Tesco 2 miles, nearest Lidl 3 miles in the opposite direction, nearest Aldi 18 miles.
At the local Tesco I can charge my electric car for free while I shop. :-)

Tesco own 75p cashew nuts out of stock, Lidl don't do that one.
Must remember Aldi also does their own also for 75p.

See, if you're clever you can shop at all 3 and get the best prices for each item.

I do feel Tesco take the mick sometimes, take Flora, Clubcard price 1.35 but noraml price 2.20 ! Lidl normal price 1.35

That's why we are shopping more and more at Aldi and Lidl without a card..

Between Aldi and Lidl, Usually Lidl has the edge on cheap pricing

Tesco

Aldi

Lidl

Depends on how the inflation is affecting the Aldi/Lidl mob. Most supermarkets run at low margins so they will have to pass on the price rises.
Tesco is a large buyer so could have some squeeze room there.

Lidl normal price 1.35

Its how much people put up with doing a full shop and buying some stuff at full stupid prices that is concerning. That's where Tesco make their money IMO.

yf23-1, poor old John needs to get some help.

Anyhow what will this inflation do to the profits at Tesco? On topic.
