04/10/2017 20:56 | Mail market report: 'It's all looking up for Tesco,' commented analyst Neil Wilson at ETX Capital. 'Dave Lewis and co are confident Tesco has not only recovered but will continue to produce growth despite fierce competition.' 'The 1p-a-share interim dividend is not massive but it's a start and shows management is happy with where things are. Pre-tax profits surged from £71m to £562m, while group sales were up 0.7%.' 'We have, for a long time, liked the prospects of Tesco's new strategy under CEO Dave Lewis which he says this morning is 'firmly on track' to deliver,' added Ed Meier, manager of the Old Mutual UK Equity Income Fund. 'These results give confidence in underlying potential for earnings, cashflow and, yes, dividends.' Retail analyst at Quilter Cheviot Amisha Chohan concurred. 'Against a competitive market backdrop, we believe the stock has strong recovery potential and a management team capable of delivering it. We have confidence in Tesco's strategy.' | philanderer

04/10/2017 17:30 | ".....Tesco fell despite reinstating its dividend after a three-year hiatus with a 1p half-year payout as sales and profits rose more than City forecasts. But shares in from Britain's biggest grocer fell more than 3% from recent five-month highs as analysts and investors dug deeper, finding disappointment in UK like-for-like sales slowing in the second quarter to 2.1% from 2.3% in the first." | philanderer

04/10/2017 14:03 | nathdani - did you actually read the article? It stated: "The significant deficit decrease is the result of lowered expectations on mortality rates, which has reduced the deficit by £711m, and the move to apply a discount rate to long-dated corporate bonds rather than gilts, which has delivered a £1.7bn reduction." | toon1966

04/10/2017 13:10 | nathdani - "How can the pension deficit come down 3 billion pounds that quick?." I know nowt about pensions but I believe it has to do with 'life expectancy' Until this year everyone thought life expectancy would continue to rise year after year. But this year (shock horror) the medics and insurance actuaries came out and said "No, average life expectancy will stay where it is for the next generation" The outcome of that is that companies don't need to pump additional millions into their pension schemes. So sorry to disappoint you but you're not going to live forever, 'tho I do hope you continue to breath for many decades, and likely a lot longer than me haha. | losos
