2 more energy suppliers go to the wall this morning.

TEP survived the 2005 price peaks in gas when Gas prices were double what they are now (In fact built their business during that difficult time). In the wake of that period, the supply agreement was set up with Npower (Now EON) giving the smoothing effect on returns that TEP enjoys now.

The bankruptcy of these smaller companies is hugely advantageous to the TEP business model.

Utility Warehouse now appearing near the top of utility comparison websites

The risk in the price of gas taken on by EON who are the supplier of energy to TEP.

This and the collapse of much of the competition has to be beneficial one feels

Yes I can confirm that, in fact I was at a two day UW leadership event this week and the CEO reported that September was the biggest sales month since 2014 and it's going up. I saw the reported customer numbers yesterday and they were twice August's number and it's only the 8th.

My own business has seen triple the number of customers in September compared to August and more importantly team members are getting more active than ever.

Thank goodness, we really needed this boost and excitement.

I have a friend who is a distributor who says that she has never been so busy signing up new customers from bust gas suppliers.

Can distributors on here confirm same?

bouycat, tks for that, very useful. Do you know if you are required to maintain your shareholding throughout your Telecom Plus contract?

Nice bounce but am now looking at the chart which tells me there may be resistance at £13 so will reconsider my options if we reach there

TP on top of comparison sites as most competative deals.. along with more competitors failing and creating a huge demand for swapping suppliers.. interesting times.

Thought I would get a pretty quick answer judging from previous answers. Never mind I can live off my new found profits from the share surge!

Hi, will be looking at all options. Also an Avro user. What is the % discount I can get as a shreholder? My problem is that I have just done a deal with vodafone for 18 mths as I now have a fibre line coming to my house and its the cheapest broadband per megabits and my upload speed is the same as my download speed by far so would be difficult to do Utility Warehouse at the moment

If you can get multiple service sign ups it makes the customer more sticky.

Incidently, the last time I looked via "MSE's Money Tips" Utility Warehouse were actually quite competitive for dual fuel.

Now an Ex Avro who was paying @ £73/month ..... 😪

A nice video:

Good point. My longer term concern though is there isn't enough growth and most people use comparison web sites and ismybillfair (which is not a price switch but seeks to get a cheaper price from your existing supplier).Nice to have a one stop shop but not too certain the cost benefits and aggravation justify it.Anyway, shorter term this looks more interesting IMO.

I guess the attraction of them that is being made apparent during the crisis is that they may not save people a fortune but they don't end up going bust so can be relied upon.

HiBe interesting if you also used a price comparison site (compare the market etc) for your energy and phone/broadband deals. My guess would be UW is only marginally better (as per their quoted average savings). That's mainly the reason I've not invested here, although reconsidering due to the gas price tailwind and possible increase in customers.

I'm now comparing my Bulb energy bills and my vodaphone broad band package to what utility warehouse has on offer and seeing if it makes sense to got through the hassle of switching to them. I notice they give a discount to shareholders too.

Thanks for the responses. I guess the way they tailor their deals and make them attractive to the displaced consumers will be part of it. As I understand they have about 650,000 existing customers so if they can even pick up 150k of the newly displaced consumers that would be quite a boost to their base.

Yes that's right. But I think scooper72 thinks UW could be doing something about steering the displaced customers our way in the first instance. Not sure how that would work, bit it's a fair point. How do you bribe Ofgem?! Or, more sensibly how does Ofgem decide where to shovel diplaced consumers ?

I may have this wrong, but I would have thought it would be the customers who have just been tranferred over to another supplier (who they didn't choose) who will be on the look out for other deals that UW will be trying to capture..

Topped up a little more this morning. Looks like the gas price crises has hit just when the share price was at the bottom of its range so makes buying now at least feel like common sense, as the price hopefully continues an upwards trend. But one thing I am unclear about is how does OfGem help redistribution of these potential new customers into the remaining suppliers. Does UW have a strategy to grasp the opportunity of the moment before it passes?

on the BBC

Avro Energy and Green both collapsed on Wednesday afternoon, hours after the sector's regulator warned "well above" hundreds of thousands of customers will have to be moved to new suppliers.

Avro Energy has 580,000 customers while Green Supplier Limited has 250,000.

Both companies said that customers will continue to receive energy while a new supplier is appointed.

The boss of regulator Ofgem warned the gas price rise was "something not seen before" and more firms would fold.

Since the sharp rise in wholesale gas prices - which firms complain they are unable to pass on to customers because of a price cap on energy bills - a number of small companies have collapsed.

They include People's Energy, Utility Point, PfP Energy and MoneyPlus Energy. Together, the recently failed companies account for more than 5% of the market, about 1.5 million customers.

Meanwhile Bulb, the UK's sixth largest energy company with 1.7 million customers, is seeking financing. And another firm, Igloo, has said it is working with restructuring consultants Alvarez & Marsal. But Igloo told the BBC it had not appointed administrators.

Ofgem's Jonathan Brearley, appearing before the cross-party Business Committee on Wednesday, declined to say if the number of customers that would eventually need new suppliers could run into "millions".

But he said: "We do expect a large number of customers to be affected. We've already seen hundreds of thousands of customers affected, that may well go well above that. It's very hard for me to put a figure on it."

Mr Brearley insisted that Ofgem had plans in place to cope as the crisis developed.

Avro and Green are just the latest providers to go bust following a sharp rise in wholesale gas prices.

Green, which employs 180 people, blamed "unprecedented market conditions and regulatory failings" for its collapse. It said that another energy provider would take on its 250,000 customers.

Good question scooper72. I'm in danger of commenting too often on here - apols if so. But in terms of what it stands for, it's about making people's lives easier because the last thing we want to think about is boring utility bills. So having one supplier that offers good, fair value and good service takes the hastle away.

What I love as a Distributor for UW is that the focus is being trustworthy - so not treating existing customers worse than new ones, and giving everyone the same offers. Also, oddly, I love that they don't want to sell at a loss to attracts customers and how they don't notice when the prices start flying up after the first year. That feels really unfair and i've found some people being totally scammed by other suppliers.

How do I become a distributor? And what does UW stand for? I am still a little in the red on my holding. But might be a good time to top up.

It's really obvious that this rise will continue as far as I'm concerned. Peel Hunt and others have upgraded Telecom Plus to target of £16 and low of £14 given how much upside there's going to be with a lot of their smaller competitors struggling to stay in business this year - read their report here (I saved it)
