10/11/2013 13:50 | Is Turkey next on the ever-growing list of destinations from Southend Airport? 2013 in News Is Turkey next on the ever-growing list of destinations from Southend Airport? NEW destinations could soon be on the horizon for Southend Airport passengers after bosses held talks with airlines. Airport operations director David Lister admitted discussions were taking place with new airlines who could make a base at Southend when its terminal extension is finished in January. Mr Lister would not reveal where new flights could be headed, but social media sites have highlighted Turkey and Bulgaria. The talks were announced as, for the first time, the airport made a pre-tax profit of £100,000 for Stobart Air in the first six months of this year. Mr Lister said: "We are talking to a number of airlines about commencing services to and from London Southend Airport, however it would be inappropriate to comment on these talks while our discussions are still under way." The profits come a year after the Stobart Group, which owns Southend and Carlisle airports, recorded a £300,000 loss in the same time-frame. Revenue rose from £7.9million to £10.4million and commercial income from the hotel, railway station, car parking and shopping all showed improvements. One reason for the profits rise is a surge in passengers, with July and August seeing 230,000 flying from Southend 29 per cent up on the same months last year. The airport has seen £23million in investment from Stobart Group, which will be topped off with the opening of the terminal extension. The new terminal boasts a new security layout, new arrivals hall, additional check-in desks, more gates, retail and commercial space and has the potential to cater for more aircraft. The Stobart Group's statement said: "Discussions are being held with a number of European-based airlines with a view to commencing services in winter 2013 and beyond. "With a capacity of more than five million passengers a year, Southend Airport has potential to create significant value for shareholders and our focus is on achieving that potential." Ian Burns, owner of Travel Smart, in the Victoria Shopping Centre, Southend, said interest in the airport was booming. He said: "We have seen a lot of people ask what destinations are available from Southend who want us to make it into a full package holiday for them. The increasing interest in Southend has opened the door for us to be able to offer package holidays to all destinations easyJet flies to." | bernie37
10/11/2013 13:35 | The Cumberland News can today reveal the logistics giant is planning a warehouse complex at Kingmoor Park should the courts block its favoured option of overhauling of the Crosby-on-Eden airfield. The firm has planning permission for a 394,000sq ft freight distribution centre at the airport. But Irthington farmer Gordon Brown has applied for a judicial review of the planning decision, which is due to be heard by a High Court judge in February. Mr Brown persuaded the Court of Appeal to quash an earlier consent, granted in 2009, after he brought judicial review proceedings. If he wins a second time, Stobart Group is ready to walk away from the airport and build a warehouse facility at Kingmoor Park on the northern edge of Carlisle. A planning application for Kingmoor Park, lodged with the city council, says that the proposed development on agricultural land at Brunthill would support 60 jobs. But if it goes ahead, plans for scheduled passenger flights from Carlisle Airport to London Southend and Dublin would be dropped and the loss-making airfield would almost certainly close. Stobart has consistently argued that the airport is viable only with rental income from warehousing. In its half-year results, published last month, the company said it was "looking at all the options" in the light of the judicial review proceedings. Chief executive Andrew Tinkler told The Cumberland News: "Kingmoor Park is a fallback position. We have to have more than one option going. "The people who will lose out if it goes ahead are the people of Carlisle because they won't get the airport. "The airport [scheme] is still our preferred option but we have to have a plan B. That's what this is." A judge sitting in July granted Mr Brown leave to apply for judicial review on six grounds. The farmer, who lives opposite the airport, argues that planning officers gave councillors "erroneous and seriously misleading" advice and that granting permission may amount to "unlawful state aid" under European law. The alternative at Kingmoor Park would incorporate 310,000sq ft of warehousing plus 9,200sq ft of office accommodation. There would be 10 HGV docks and parking for 81 lorries. Of the 60 jobs supported, 35 would be drivers, 15 warehouse operatives and the rest admin and planning staff. The scheme would form part of the industrial estate's £60m 'hub' project, which already has outline planning consent and has the potential to create 500 jobs. It is being marketed as Monarch@Kingmoor. Tony Goddard, managing director of Kingmoor Park Properties, said: "The concept is aimed at a very select sector of the property market, those capable of dealing with a development of up to 1m sq ft. This application is the first to be generated by marketing Kingmoor Park to this sector. "It sees the largest industrial estate in Cumbria working with the best known name in logistics to put Carlisle on the map as a desirable business location." | bernie37

27/10/2013 17:11 | Southend is certainly a great bit of business for Stobart. I flew through there a few months ago and it seems to be a very slick and easy place to use. Easyjet are looking to expand their service there but I still reckon the best of this rally is over. Am looking for 150p. | mreasygoing
26/10/2013 15:44 | Not sure about that, Stobart were at 160p when Southend Airport was being talked about a couple of years back. It is up and running now, so its value must be much more. The airport was being showcased to some Japanese businessmen recently, all good publicity. | yewtrees |
