23/10/2017 12:31 | As a partial indicator of how well the UK economy is doing, perhaps the FTSE's reluctance to keep pace with the DOW suggests the UK economy is not doing so well as that of the US. A further point is that investors who pursue dividend income prefer to buy 'solid' blue chip companies. It is clear that the dividend cover of such companies has become unsustainable for many over recent years with the attendant risk of dividend reduction or cancellation. As the market place fills up with dodgy goods, customers will inevitably look for greater rewards elsewhere. | patdavey
23/10/2017 10:45 | No. There are two points to that. Many other markets have risen strongly , but what I cannot fathom is that when I started investing over 30 years ago I was informed by my broker that a a general rule good blue chip companies should have a pe of around 15. That seems to no longer be the case and now 12 is the norm. Why is this ? | lab305
23/10/2017 10:09 | Or is the Dow 8000 points too high? | patdavey
23/10/2017 08:16 | The British stock market is pathetic. Almost every other significant market in the world up around new highs and we languish 500 points above where we were 18 years ago ! That's 500 points since 1999 , and now we have the pundits suggesting that we are due for a 'correction' . Yeah . We are due a correction alright .....about 4000 points higher to keep pace with the US. Unbelievable. | lab305 |
