The problem is that the B share stuff affects all shareholders and reduces the shareholding so if you want to maintain the dividend stream you have to buy the reduction in your holding on the open market.
A straight forward buy back has no effect on any given holding and if you needed some cash then you could sell how many shares you want on the open market.
If I wanted a cash return I would prefer it as a special dividend especially as my holding is in an isa.

Of course it is virtually impossible to tell how effective share buy backs are on the share price as they occur over extended periods of time and there are so many general market influences. After all is a share price rooted in reality or is it based on expectations , realistic or not , broker upgrades/downgrades and so on. In fact the only time it may be based on something real , apart from market specific stuff, is when a trading update occurs for better or worse and even that is driven by market expectations met or not.

But has anyone, ever, known a buyback that worked i.e. made the price of the remaining shares go up as you'd expect as a simple matter of mathematics? Personally I'd go for a cash return every time.

The next temporary price fluctuation will be regarding the B share consolidation causing a drop which should be reversed when completed and then possibly a rise as shareholders use the proceeds to top up their new holdings to ensure the total annual dividend is maintained. With hindsight the £1bn could have been spent on just normal share buy backs for simplicity.

This is a long term dividend paying income share. Just look at there dividend history. Stop panicking over short term share price fluctuations and enjoy the Indian Summer.

It's pay day over 6% divi, losing money on the share price though and not sure which way this is going too much positioning

Perhaps it's because they are no longer an insurer. Flogged that bit to Phoenix. I'm just SO relieved to know that without the share purchasing and cancellation the drop could be much larger (like heck).

A terrible day and what's worse, it seems to be company specific - other insurers are doing rather well. Surprised there have been no comments.

Thanks scrwal, that's the information that's really needed. One might reasonably have thought something agreed upon way back in June had been completed by now!

Per the RNS announcement 31 Aug on the completion of the sale to Phoenix was this "Exact timings for the B share scheme and the consolidation, including the record time, will be notified to shareholders by way of a RNS announcement."

EI and 64 thanks for your more detailed input....I had assumed that one had read recent announcements over last 2/3 months...obviously investors opinions will vary, but all in all I sincerely believe that the final quarter and beyond will enhance value. My apologies MC.

MCunliffe1.....it's done a bit better than going nowhere lately. I was in at 312 on the 31st July, but some context required. The general market has crashed over 6%, there is a 2.3% dividend accruing and that slight rise of 1.5% ( incl dealing) to boot.

Bucking the Market by nearly 10% in just over a month is not to be sneezed at. At the very least it's been a safe harbour in a storm.

MC, PHNX stake, and the Indian JV's are perhaps what others are referring
to re value.

However, and it's a big however - the vast bulk of SLA's earnings are derived from
active asset management fees. AUM is falling. Unless they can arrest these
declines, the share price may struggle to make headway.

SLA make the challenges crystal clear in their last statement. It's worth
reading.

It means there are fads and fashions in the market and sometimes a sector is out of favour. If a stock looks cheap you have to try and work out whether it's cheap because there are real issues, in which case it won't recover; or it's cheap because it's out of style, in which case it will recover and could be a fantastic investment.

Many times "dogs of the footsie" have been the basis of a great portfolio.

am I missing something here? These shares seem to be going nowhere yet loads of you post on here to the contrary.

I am NO expert in share dealing and most of what is posted on this thread passes over my head but, really,

"SLA have some excellent holdings, and hopefully the market sentiment will rotate into this sector more favourably in due course. They have the added attraction of some significant developments occurring in the final quarter, which may attract some attention."

What does this mean?. What's occuring in the final (this) quarter?

ADR's are up at close on Wall Street at 324p equiv....sadly this hardly matters as volume is quite small, and the ADR's always appear to be 10p to 15p higher than the shares traded in London. SLA have some excellent holdings, and hopefully the market sentiment will rotate into this sector more favourably in due course. They have the added attraction of some significant developments occurring in the final quarter, which may attract some attention.
