Superior, ok, I understand, it's the highest quality, top drawer stamps, you are referring to... I agree these could fetch SG cat and much more ..

Comes down to supply and demand....

silkthetech.. agreed majority of stamps sell for less than Stanley cat. im not talking the dross though, anything investment grade goes for catalogue and above, unless it has defects. This isn't just Stanley who charge and get these prices its any company that deals in fine stamps. Anything that isn't top drawer is on E-bay and in auction .

had a look at this scholium company this morning . you would have thought the portfolio of stamps have been purchased from Stanley ?.. especially as the staff for the new enterprise come from the Stanley stable . initially I thought good, pay down debt and ensure continuation of banks finance. Like clocktower says if the discount is hefty ?.. could throw a big cloud over stanleys remaining stock . The only positive im thinking is looking at scholiums mayfair offices , they wont be dealing in any dross !. They would of had to pay fairly decent albeit at a discount . Im thinking that discount will not have been ridiculous !

Thank you for that link sikhthetech.

"The Group has also acquired a significant portfolio of stamps, which the Directors expect to be sufficient to cover Mayfair's auctioneering and dealing requirements for the foreseeable future."

I wonder if they acquired the significant portfolio of stamps from SGI? And if so, at a hefty discount I expect.

superior, generally agree with what you're saying reg quality....

Regarding SG prices... many collectors over many years, inc myself, have accepted that SG prices are high and should be used as a guide...

There are occassions when a stamp could be worth the SG cat or even more...
supply and demand...

Generally, in my experience, though majority of stamps sell for less than SG..

orange . get your full quota of premium bonds , you should get a return higher than interest from your bank.. unless you are incredibly unlucky :-)..silthetech..mervyn4.. pugugly. I agree with you all in the main . Sgi basically has made and controlled the market for stamps.. which is why I have always thought rich philatelists would not allow it to go bust, even if the banks pulled the rug ?. I disagree on catalogue pricing though. Ive done this once before and I think on here ?.. I will pick a stamp on Stanley gibbons and it will be priced at cat value. Nobody will be able to find the same stamp exact same quality cheaper. Im not talking a one off 200,000 grand no, one around 1,000 pound mark. anyone willing to take the challenge ?.. you will pull up maybe 4-6 examples all very much cheaper and there will be a reason for it . Quality !

Titanic letter sold for £126k...
shows there isn't a shortage of collectors looking for rare collectibles...

"The auctioneer, Andrew Aldridge, described the anonymous customer as someone "who collects iconic items from history"."

Pug, yes it WAS a false market, especially with their investment fund...
However, serious collectors have always known to use a % of SG cat val...
If that SG% rises then so does the actual value % wise...

Ebay and other auctions gave the market some clarity and realistic values...

sikh:- I think you may find that SG were both the price makers and price takes for many stamps when you look into the small print so in some ways a false market.

Mervin, exactly.. stamp values have risen well over the past 20yrs... compare that to the FTSE100 and dotcom boom/bust...
Wasn't FTSE100 at around 7000 18yrs ago...it's currently 7500!!!

Whereas Vic stamps like mint 1d blacks & 2d blues have skyrocketed..

The internet and especially Ebay helped genuine collectors obtain more realistic values... Those genuine collectors were already aware of high SG prices and the % of SG was always used, as it is STILL today...

Ironically the stamps have done better than the shares.

bought some rare 1d blacks years ago as a kid and sold last year.

I always wondered why they didnt diversify into coins and antiquities.

Bit of a gambling pit as well, to be fair. I've been holding for over 50 years and have yet to win a penny.

im with you Sikhthetech. The fact a previous board messed up doesn't mean stamps are finished far from it. I like what the new board has done so far. I think a lot of comments on here are just sour grapes , invested at the wrong time . Those that don't realise yet The Stockmarket is nothing but a gambling pit. If you cant handle it buy premium bonds .

golden,

"The above just makes Stanley Gibbons abject failure even more inexcusable!!!"
why?

The failings were by the previous BoD... The new BoD have investigated the accounts/statements and came up with their conclusions...

There are too many company's BoD who don't admit that they have problems until it's too late...
By accepting they have problems and recognising what those problems are, the new BoD can address them... sticking their head in the sand, wouldn't have helped...

They can then draw a line under the problems and move forward to try and turn the business around...

So they have lost connection "with collectors who have historically been the bedrock support of the group"

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot!

What a farce the Stanley Gibbon has been.

No wonder their shares have CRASHED from c 400p to c 7p (what an investment)

These muppets have destroyed the brand and any credibility/value they ever had in my view.

RIP Stanley Gibbons

Superior, agree.. I haven't seen anything to suggest stamps are dying as collectibles...

This from SGI fy results:

"Against a backdrop of political and market uncertainty, both domestically and internationally, the market for rare collectibles has remained surprisingly robust. In particular, the higher quality items continue to be sought after and steadily increase in value over the medium to long term. The key to identifying such items is having specialists who know the difference - we are fortunate at Stanley Gibbons to have a number of such specialists."

"Our plan is to reconnect with collectors who have historically been the bedrock support for the Group."

clocktower,
agree... the previous BoD messed up... How can any company promote an investment, whilst doing their own homework...

The hope here is that the new BoD can continue and turn the company around into a profitable company or it get's sold, hopefully, at a significant premium...

I'm for the former but the latter will do..

Trouble started when they were trying to get hold of investors money on an advisory basis, as though they were experts of sound investment. The old board should be held accountable for anybodies investment losses imo.
