13/6/2019 14:09 | SSE PLC (SSE.LN) said Thursday that it plans to close its last remaining coal power station due to it no longer being economically viable in the face of competition from gas- and renewable-energy sources. The energy company said that the Fiddler's Ferry power station, in northern England, which has an operational capacity of 1,510 megawatts, employees 158 people. Following the closure, SSE said it hopes to be able to redeploy at least some of the plant's personnel. The U.K.-listed company said it is beginning consultation with both employees and trade unions, with a view of shutting the plant by March 31, 2020. The plant is currently loss making, and has had limited success in power-market auctions. The company also cited environmental considerations for its decision. "SSE itself has adopted a target to reduce the carbon intensity of the electricity it generates by 50% by 2030, compared to 2018 levels," it said. It also said that its Peterhead gas-fired power station, Scotland, wasn't able to secure a conditional capacity market agreement for the year from October 2019 to September 2020. It said that the plant will continue to operate this winter regardless. Write to Carlo Martuscelli at carlo.martuscelli@do (END) Dow Jones Newswires June 13, 2019 08:50 ET (12:50 GMT) | ariane

30/5/2019 07:23 | SSE wind farms take market by storm May 30 2019, 12:01am, The Times Projects with high subsidies like Beatrice in the Moray Firth now look very lucrative Eight miles off the Caithness coast in the Moray Firth, SSE has just installed the 84th and final turbine of the Beatrice offshore wind farm (Emily Gosden writes). When the £2.6 billion, 588-megawatt project is fully running this summer, it should generate enough electricity to power 450,000 homes — and enough cash to make a healthy return for the energy group. In 2014, the government awarded a contract guaranteeing SSE an inflation-linked price of £140 for every megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity that Beatrice generates — more than £158 in today’s money, or roughly treble present market prices. The project, of which SSE owns 40 per cent, could be in line for £250 million a year in subsidies. Shortly before it won the contract, SSE had… | la forge

29/5/2019 06:44 | This buy back of shares is just not working. It has added no value for investors. Surely it would be better to lower debt and return any excess to investors as a payment? | ch1ck
24/5/2019 08:27 | Yes but the results are almost irrelevant to the current share price A yield of 8% is not much to be pleased about it a Labour Govt buys them back for a bargain price. Mind you , if Newbank is correct and there is a forced buyback at some average of the last 6 months price it would make an interesting scenario ; an incentive for the market to push the price up! | wad collector
