Totally ridiculous fall but in fairness I don't know how it didn't react like this on the results, which were hardly encouraging.

My thinking re: 'Newco' is that to hold it it needs to justify itself. I.e. would I buy it from scratch if it were a pre-existing company? For an outright new pick I use a short set of simple metrics; hurdles for Market Capitalisation - is it (preferably) in the FTSE-100? What is it's Current Yield, Dividend Cover%, and so on. Even more personal things like whether I respect the company/product. I expect I'm not alone in having been through the mill with utility co billing, call centres and so on, and if Newco is going to include those sectors of Oldco then it would be a negative for me. FWIW For similar reasons I'd never invest in Royal Mail [these days].
But I expect the proposed end-point, it's metrics and so on will become clearer nearer the time.

Thanks also to Bounty and agree, this is definitely one of the better threads on advfn. can i just check with others to see if my reading of the situation is correct? we have a dividend for 17/18 of 94.7p and for 18/19 of 97.5p. after that the dividend will be 80p. if the retail arm is spun out late this year then is there the potential to receive income from the 'newco' and therefore in 18/19 receive 97.5p plus additional dividend from newco...? if so then that for me would be an incentive to hold both shares rather than sell newco and buy more SSE as gateside has suggested. grateful for comments!

I would be tempted to sell the shares in the spin off Consumer Company and reinvest proceeds back in SSE. But it's early days to make any decisions.

Thanks Bounty, it's very helpful this being posted right here by a 'trusted poster', so no need to trawl the SSE site itself.

Does anyone have views re: this demerger? It appears a separate company and shares will be created. What might it be [beyond I believe 'SSE-ES'], do others who know foresee it as something they would wish to hold in it's own right? Reason I'm asking is I don't assume I'll want to hold the end result of a merger (or similar), nor some new creation that's a spin-off. ....p.s. going to be interesting to see how any future CGT reporting gets impacted by this '''splitting''' of the share into two parts.

"The merger of Npower and SSE's retail operations is undergoing a competition investigation after the two energy giants failed to address concerns.
The deal would see the so-called big six energy companies become a big five."
...

"The UK's competition watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority, has warned the planned merger could reduce competition and push up prices for some customers.

Under the proposed deal, the new company will be listed on the London Stock Exchange, with SSE shareholders holding 65.6% and Npower owner Innogy holding 34.4%.

SSE said the deal remained on track for completion in the last quarter of 2018 or the first quarter of 2019"

One thing that the forward planning and future dividend policy cannot allow for is politics.
That uncertainty must continue to put a brake on the share price here , at least until there is a bit more clarity. If there was confidence that there was going to be a period of political stability (Not Corbyn) , then surely the share price would be more like £20 on fundamentals.

Sorry guys got that wrong. It was the adjusted and unadjusted earnings that did it. Apologise.
