All this chat about tax and yet SRT doesn’t pay any!

Why?Well you need to make profits and the past losses in SRT will mean no tax for quite some while yet.

If anything, the deferred tax asset will be worth more given the rise in the CT rate.

They have got some and have registered for the scheme. My doubts are about how much of a systems sale would be covered - theoretically the lot but maybe reselling eg RADAR's would be split out. Most of the profit should accrue to the IP part anyway. I haven't studied the scheme in detail but there is a notional 10% deducted for expenses as well as a marketing spend, but I think if SRT hire a good team of accountants and can prove smaller actual amounts (given 10% of say £50 million is well over what they spend on sundries or marketing) they would be able to reduce those deductions and benefit substantially. All they need is some profits.

I hope the Chancellor does indeed simplify the thing.

Interesting LaV. If I recall correctly ST has never been inclined to use patents because of costs, taking them out and enforcing breaches. Perhaps this might be attractive.

As an aside, I hold shares in a company (Strix) that rigorously enforces its patents and successfully too. They make thermostatic controls for electric kettles and defend a 40% world market share largely from far east knock off copies. There’s no encrypted software just well designed engineering so unlike SRT, they can’t rely on a product that’s difficult to copy.

Here is a pre-budget comment I found interesting for the likes of SRT, which can benefit from the patent box scheme. How much is the question?

'The UK Budget, due next week, is widely expected to raise corporation tax from 19% to 25% over the next few years.

The Patent Box tax break allows UK companies to pay a reduced corporation tax rate of 10% on income from patented products.

The expected increase in corporation tax would significantly shift the cost-benefit analysis in favour of filing patents. Any costs associated with obtaining a patent portfolio would presumably be offset by the greater savings on offer.

We have already seen that the Patent Box is not just for the the largest blue-chip companies. The benefits are also substantial for many of our SME clients.

It remains to be seen whether the Patent Box regime itself will be adjusted in the Budget. There are rumours are of a simplification to the system- many will recall that pressure was put on the UK Government under EU state aid rules, which are less of a concern post-Brexit.

Whatever happens, the Patent Box should be on the radar of innovative companies looking to reduce their tax burden.'

Thank you LaValmy.

What 'caught my eye' was a tugboat in the Port of Vitoria, (Brasil) called "MA 500TR" which on searching gave 'MA-500TR Class B AIS Transponder by Icom America'

@Piedro

How does this square with regulations and does it limit their target market?

"Silent Mode
Operate securely and privately with the silent mode function. Switch off the AIS transmitter to temporarily stop sending out position location. Other AIS signal reports art still received when silent mode is on. Keep fishing spots privately from other vessels by utilizing silent mode."

Does this use SRT technology or is from one of our competitors?

Interesting find !

Dainton was head RN man on the ground in Bahrain for the couple of years (mid 17 > mid 19) which likely overlap with SRT's securing its contract and subsequent implementation.

It seems Brigadier Siyadi visited the UK earlier this month. I can't find out much more than that or what he was doing. Probably met up with his best mate Mr Tucker?

They still want to sell a bunch of buoy trackers to Scotland.

But overall the UK has very few fishing boats. It is less than a 1,000 on the VMS currently.

Mind you, once SRT takes off, Brenda will be handing out export awards for exporting from Cork and the charlatans will be queueing up for photo opps.

I don’t know if I’m remembering this right, but when the subject of overseas sales being long-winded was brought up ages ago (webcast question ?) I’m sure ST said something that implied the UK was one of the worst. If so maybe thats why not made a fuss about selling here. Got no money now anyway.
