Given MDC current level of debt this outcome is not unexpected.

In a years time Spire will most probably be back above 300p anyway. With their 30% stake Mediclinic would probably return but next year will have to stump up nearer 400p.

Mediclinic need to stop wasting everyone's time with their LOW ball offer. Stump up another £100M or so which is peanuts in the big picture and get the job done. 325-330p.

MDC seem to be struggling with the t/o financials:

'Although discussions have continued, no agreement has yet been reached on any of the key terms of an offer.'

'Mediclinic takes a highly disciplined approach to capital allocation and is focused on ensuring that any offer it makes for the remaining share capital of Spire is in the best interests of Mediclinic shareholders.'

3.50p is pure speculation based on one shareholder stating that is the minimum they would take. Roll on the put up or shut up date.

Same here che7win, 50p gain in a few days not to be sniffed at. More downside than upside at this point.

Good luck to those here for the longer term.

Woodford topping up at these prices means a better offer is coming - 330p?

Yesterday, analysts at Berenberg said prospects for Spire, which runs 38 hospitals and two cancer centres, were strong given predicted NHS demand, and Mediclinic should be applauded for spotting the chance to snap up the group cheaply.

They said they expected the bid to be an opening salvo from Mediclinic, which has until November 20 to make a formal offer. There has also been speculation that HCA is interested in buying Mediclinic's stake.

Mediclinic, which is listed in Johannesburg and London, said it was considering its position.

An HCA spokesman said it was 'unable to comment on market rumour or speculation'.

People often slate Woodford - I said earlier this month he'd been upping his stake at during lows. His Funds (+others) recognised the true value & didn't panic on bad PR. Momentum was back before this - but bids certainly help speed up proceedings.

I reckon they will have to come back with an offer at minimum 320p, SPI as a company is now in play.I wonder if other companies will join in bidding for it?

P/E of 22 (same rating as Mediclinic) puts this at the 400p level not even accounting for any future growth.

Nobody goes in with their final offer. A significant portion isn't in cash. Opening share price will be interesting.

Preliminary offer 298.6p (150p cash; 0.232 new Mediclinic shares per Spire share) has been rejected.

I'm not sure how much MDC can afford to up their offer.

cyfran101,

True, long term holders could well see this as too cheap. I guess it would get the ball rolling and may entice out other interested parties.

I'm not much of a trader, being still mainly invested but I am holding a bit more cash and looking for the occasional shorter term trade when something like SPI catches my eye. Our differing potential happiness with 320p is interesting in the context of different types of investors and their strategies and the resulting hopes/ expectations.
