Good RNS this morning...onwards and upwards!SpaceandPeople plc("SpaceandPeople" or the "Group")Trading UpdateSpaceandPeople, (AIM: SAL) the retail, promotional and brand experience specialist, is pleased to announce a trading update for the first four months of 2017.Revenue and profit before tax for the first four months of 2017 were ahead of management expectations as a result of strong sales in the Group's UK promotions division in particular. Although revenue across the business remains weighted towards the second half of the year, the Board is confident that the strong start to 2017 will be maintained throughout the year.In addition to this improved revenue generation, the Group has successfully renegotiated the terms of the German retail division's contract with ECE. The resulting reduction in rental costs in 2017 means that this contract will now trade more profitably than had been anticipated previously. As a result of the increased revenues and reduced costs, the Board now anticipates profit before taxation for the financial year ending 31 December 2017 will be approximately GBP1.1 million and Basic EPS will be approximately 4.5 pence.Cash generation in the business has been strong during the year to date and this is also expected to continue throughout the remainder of the year. Management expects net cash for the year ending 31 December 2017 to be approximately GBP1.25million.Matthew Bending, Chief Executive Officer, commented"I am pleased to be able to report that 2017 has started strongly. The combination of better than forecast revenues and reduced costs along with the positive impact of the restructuring carried out in 2016 has meant that profitability so far this year has been ahead of expectations and I look forward to this continuing throughout the rest of 2017".

I note that net cash currently forecast to be £1.25m at 12.17 up from £0.4m at 12.16 so hopefully there will be no problems with Lloyds.

Only just got round to looking at the AR of SAL and had hoped to make the AGM.
I was looking to see if I should take advantage of the recent increase in share price to sell my small holding to tidy up my portfolio ; have decided to stay on noting the improved performance in H2 and the first two months. By the time we get the interims we will have had the results of the July 31 covenant testing with Lloyds; I see that £1m of the facility expires then as well so we should get news of this.. I note their comment that they have significant headroom with their cash position.
Going concern statement seemed reasonably strong which suggests they are not concerned with the July facility expiry.
I see that Equity Development are talking about a 1p dividend being paid next year.
Their balance sheet is dominated by Goodwill; I looked at the relevant note in the AR as I was somewhat surprised that they had not made a charge in its valuation: one reason they did not was that the discount rate they use is a- to me- absurdly low 3%...I would certainly have challenged them on this if I had made the AGM. Last year it was 6%. I am surprised that the auditors signed off on this.
Good to see relative stability in shareholding structure and that H Hale have reduced their holding and for me good that Gresham House have increased theirs.

more to come :

Overall, with a clearer focus, a better integrated venues and sales teams, a lower cost base and good quality business opportunities, we expect to be able to return the Group to a sustainable level of profitability in 2017, and trading for the first two months of the year has been ahead of management expectations.

This has a future I think. If not on its own then as part of another complementary business. I have nibbled a few but having trouble having my orders filled. Not a basket case. People love physical shopping - footfall high and predictable = opportunity for brands & launches. I just hope they can exit Europe (where required) economically as can be expensive in places like France.

Results not as bad as I feared and current trading is strong. Bit of a worry about the banking covenants though.

No dividend as previously highlighted.

boonkoh: Appear Here - Interesting proposition but no indication of pricing (that I can find) and difference between the package and that offered by SAL . However appears to be very much a competitor in a crowded market place (imo)

Anyone any experience of them or the cost benefit anlaysis between them and SAL ?

Potential startup competitor? Check out Appear Here. While they focus on pop up stores and spaces, they have relationships with 8 of the top 10 largest landlords in the UK, as well as Transport for London. So they could easily expand to offering monetisation of the types of spaces that Spaceandpeople do now.

Must confess, I haven't been watching sal since selling quite a while ago, but one thing I meant to watch out for was the "result" of the meeting the CEO told Paulypilot about the last time he was interviewed. IIRC, the CEO told PP that he was to meet the French Mall owners the next day, to discuss the results of the trial SAL had carried out in their Malls, which had been mixed and imho far from conclusively positive.

But although I didn't see anything subsequently which spelled out the conclusions of that meeting (may have just missed it), there doesn't seem to be any mention of it, other than a mention of trial costs as an exceptional item, in the latest update. My conclusion is that the trial did not result in further business. Have I missed anything?
Regards.

Gostevie, you would think at their current price that there is only one way for this share to go but I wouldn't be too sure on that. SAL do not have the best name in the industry and their admission that some contracts are up for renewal this year and that they do not expect all to be renewed causes alarm. Yes there are many reasons why contracts are not renewed, but doing a sparkling job for the landlord is not one of them.

I do hold shares in SAL but i look daily at the share price with one eye closed.

Having previously held shares in SAL between March and May 2015 and making a (very) small profit, I have just dipped my toe in the water again this morning.

I have bought 11,258 shares at 18.55p.

Hoping that the results announcement on 27th March gives cause for optimism.
