Big write-up in IC on S32 by FT mining correspondent Alex Hamer. Getting rid of the company's coal assets is seen as positive. Aluminium at 1/3rd of revenue is at a 3 year high.

Intro

"Paying to get assets off your books does not usually generate investors' excitement. But diversified miner South32 (S32) saw its share price keep moving upwards after it announced in early April that it would get rid of its South African coal mines by handing the buyer, Seriti Resources, $200m (£145m) as well as a $50m loan."

Summary

"Why buy a second-tier miner when the biggest companies in the sector are doing so well? Building a portfolio is about spreading risk. South32 looks cheap valued on earnings and offers exposure to the broader industrial strength story, with a different suite of metals to the majors and less governance risk than Glencore (GLEN), which also has zinc and nickel. Rio Tinto (RIO) mines aluminium but relies on iron ore for its earnings.
South32 without the South African coal assets is a better group and will have more cash to throw around once this deal is done, despite having to fork over $200m to Seriti. Buy."

S32 getting a mini price rally on last couple of days from the Reddit/Gamestop private "investors" moving on to silver.

It is not clear who exactly is prompting silver's move other than speculative bubbles seem to be the flavour of the last few weeks.

"Our Cannington mine in Australia has grown to become the world’s largest and lowest cost producer of silver. Here we produce six per cent of the world’s silver."

Averaged using £/cost averaging............

I noticed that GLEN said that their China orders in 2016 for zinc and nickle are very good and the article went on to say China consumes 50% of the worlds nickle supply and 46% for zinc. These two metals form a big part of the S32 mining operations and on top of that the outlook for silver (another S32 holding) looks good over the next few years as well.

I believe that S32 are now very oversold as small shareholders are still selling....always a reasonable sign that a bottom is being formed in the share price.

Sorry if I seem to be talking my book but for me a contarian investor this share is a steal for 2016.

Hopefully, dealings in the shares are not suddenly suspended where the small investors lose every penny that they invested into the failing company.

Good luck with your strategy. I hope that it works out OK and that you bounce back into profit. 51p seems like an uncanny average buying price. Most investors in this awful stock will have lost a ton of cash.

If I listened to everyones opinion I would never invest but I think you have overlooked some fundementals and that is the world needs metals and minerals and big mines will now take over a decade to come on stream. That leaves the current big mines the only players left and some investors have forgotten this.

I don't want to brag but all my capital has been made over the last 20 years from mining shares both in the UK and Canada so I do no a little about the subject.

S32 is the only mining share I have bought recently (GLEN/BLT/RIO all sold in Q1 this year) and my average price for S32 is 51p so I don't think I am catching a falling knife only trying to buy a big position over a reasonable period of time.

Shall we leave it at that...........?

My Basset Hound could have written the Motley Fool article but thanks for posting it.

The article says nothing new and in fact at the current rate of production and sales the debt could nearly have been paid off in my estimation. Why these people do not do their research I will never know!!!!

I made capital on this when it went down and was lucky to sell on a bounce. But then I decided I would £ cost average which I am doing down to 65p or even lower because this company is in such a good position to sell its minerals once the industry has stablised. Investors have to realise that there is a break-even price for all commodities and if prices come down much more there will be no stocks left to sell......then what!!.....up goes the price and then panic and inflation starts all over again...........are we getting near the bottom??

I keep an eye on Glen as it destocks as well as others in the world wide metals industries and as I am an investor I will sit until I see a good return on my capital.

S32 holds its AGM on 18 November so there will be more news to come from that session.

It is not unusual to see selling pressure in spin-offs where a parent company has distributed shares to shareholders. Many reasons for this including institutional shareholders with shares outside the index/too small mkt cap, investors unfamilar with the company, too little info, too complicated prospectus/listing particulars etc. Sound familar?

The bad news is that these shares can underperform for months or even a year. The good news is this can present very rewarding returns over longer periods. Don't take it from me - read the experts. Greenblatt for starters.

So no rush to get in and if you are not a patient investor, forget it. I am scaling in myself but if the directors start buying then don't hang about.

A financial calendar on the investors section of their website would help investors to plan and maybe have a bit more faith in S32 going forward.
