Next boss: 'People do not buy a new outfit to stay at home'

The boss of Next has warned that the retailer faces a "very significant drop in sales" as a result of the effect of coronavirus on the business.

Lord Wolfson said online sales were "likely to fare better" than the shops, but would also suffer "significant losses".

"People do not buy a new outfit to stay at home," he added.

When coronavirus first appeared in China, Lord Wolfson said Next assumed the threat was to its supply chain.

However, he said: "It is now very clear that the risk to demand is by far the greatest challenge we face and we need to prepare for a significant downturn in sales for the duration of the pandemic"...

Massively over sold. In general following on in the same vein as the craziness seen on the countries supermarkets. There are a lot of funds in the markets feeding on this, shorting easy targets whipping up dear and taking your money. Be sensible, do your own homework and don't take anyone on these BB's word for it (incl mine) and see what your outcome looks like.I am a buyer here.

it raised cash so it might get by but it will need refinancing. Equity value of zero imo

Worthless soon.
Shame really as this had a real chance. But sales will collapse here as women are not going to buy these clothes ...they are more interested in staying alive. The sort of loss making blue sky stock with no business that will get dumped. If it can get out of the other side intact somehow it will need a complete refinance and existing equity will be worthless. Rotten timing and rotten luck for this start up.

They say they're now going to cut advertising spend and rely purely on repeat orders. But the problem as I see it is that the clothes they sell are fashionable clothes which women wear to be seen in. High end work clothes and going out clothes. As nobody will be going out much or going to work much I can't see much demand for the next 6 months at least.
