08/2/2017 10:12 | TechMarketView: Sophos sees Q3 profit Preliminary Q3 results from UK cyber security specialist Sophos were well received by the market with double digit billings growth, a return to quarterly operating profit and particularly strong cash generation. Looks like its cloud-based Sophos Central platform and Intercept X endpoint protection solution (which gained 3,300 clients in the quarter) was, as Sophos says, a "key driver" in its performance. A trading update calculates that Sophos’ GAAP revenue grew 11% to US$135m yoy (13% at constant currency) with non-GAAP billings up 16% to US$164m (18%). Free cash flow increased 28% to US$181m and cash EBITDA grew 35% to US$49m. The US$2m operating profit for the quarter gives particular cause for celebration following consecutive operating losses of US$13m (Q316), US$33m (FY16) and US$25m (H117). Sophos shares were up 8% @290p in early trading today. Following its IPO in June 2015 @225p the company invested heavily in research and development to bring new products to market whilst changes to its billing model which shifted customers away from upfront capex fees and into recurring subscriptions have had an additional impact on its operations. Sophos also announced it will pay US$100m to acquire US malware protection firm Invincea (which recorded billings of US$13.1m in its last financial year) and integrate its machine learning threat detection technology into Sophos’ own product lines. We think that enhanced portfolio looks strong going forward and addresses a segment of the enterprise market which we expect to expand as companies look for greater automation and shift more of their cyber security provision and management into cloud-hosted services. Looks like Sophos is heading in the right direction. | aishah | |

08/6/2016 13:34 | Much hyped tech area: anti-virus, internet security et al, but can't see much special about Sophos that makes it stand out, or even stand, lol. Been watching for goodly time, but simply doesn't seem to have anything wow or watch-this-space about it; so now taken it off my watch list. | andrewbaker |
