Songbird Estates rose 3.5 per cent to 169¾p amid rumours of stakebuilding. Evolution Securities started coverage of the property company, which owns most of Canary Wharf, with a "buy" recommendation and 185p target price.

"Songbird is a unique company in the sector," said Evolution. "It is a virtually pure play on central London offices with heavy exposure to financial markets."

Property agent Knight Frank said it expected office rents in the City to rise 19 per cent this year.

Some traders think Songbird could be a takeover target for overseas investors. The Qatar Investment Authority owns a 24 per cent holding.

Up 6p on low volume. On 28 Jan up only 2p on (relatively) high volume, including two buys of 3 mill each. Up 8p on 4 Jan, can't trace volume back that far. Why these strong moves on a fraction of a percent of the shares in issue?

Thanks for that chaps, but I imagine that all of the new major shareholders will similarly have directors on the Board. This lot is a bit young, especially the Sheikh, who became chairman of EFG-Hermes Qatar aged 21!

Would like to see the share price put on a few more pounds before a takeover. If the graph is to be believed, the shares once stood at £180, allowing for the right issue. Hard to believe, I thought the highest they were was £9, and stood at 33p when the rights issue was anounced. Then dropped to 1.5p and wiped out everybody's holding value.

Well, the share price is making up for lost time, on a day when most of the big contracts were sells. Systematic selling, 12 lots of 10,000@165, after which the buying and selling was 50/50, lifting the price to 168.7.

Know of any reason, Smartypants?
