IMO a change of name will give someone a chance to create a new thread

The object of which will be to remove access to my correct and well thought out predictions regarding this share going back many years to circa when it was 400p.

buywell has NEVER ever to the best of his elephantine memory called this up once.

You watch ... buywell predicts a new thread within a month and with privileges that will allow the creator to terminate me.

buywell takes his leave and says bye bye

It can always drop further - that is one lesson I've learned particularly of this stock down the years.

I do not see how the share price can drop much further. I agree with Al.

Tournasol If you search for soco you get articles about Virunga! In 2019 people still think Soco operate the licence! There's some idiot on twitter telling people to go to soco's office to complain about the national park! A rebrand and name change is 5 years overdue imo!

Hi T,As discussed when if was announced, there are sound reasons (unusually) for this name change....including the drawing of a permanent line under DRC, the new strategic focus on Egypt and ME (eg Israel) and, IMO, the possibility that VN will be sold in the medium term future. When SOCO was formed, the assets included Tunisia, UK and Mongolia. If SOCO had attracted a large number of institutional followers with its existing name, then there would be something to lose. But, with new management, new assets, and a new growth focus the time now seems right to carve out a new profile.

Judging by the share price decline today and it’s timing, publication of the name change circular seems to have gone down like a lead balloon !

It hasn't worked out too well for Imperial Brands. Share price halved since it changed its name from Imperial Tobacco two years ago. On the other hand, Google's share price has doubled since it became Alphabet in 2015.

Wonder which way Soco/Pharos will go?

I'm surprised that Soco has decided to change its name.

I can't ever remember when a company changing its name actually achieved any significant advantage by so doing. I couldn't care less what the name is. I'm much more interested in what they actually do.

Having said that, I have twice had to manage the implementation of a name change from an IT perspective. Sadly most commercial systems have been designed without enough forethought. Changing a name ought to be no more than changing a variable parameter on a data file. But many/most systems have names which are effectively hard wired into the code and a simple name change ends up costing a ludicrous amount of money and time and introduces the possibility of error during the change process.

One of the worst things I dealt with was a rebranding exercise which involved changing the fonts used in all printed, electronic and visual output. To make things worse the Corporate Image consultants insisted on introducing special bespoke fonts which were not supported by many of the components of the system. We ended up in the ludicrous situation of having to replace hundreds of brand new PC's, servers and printers simply to enable fonts to be introduced which were almost indistinguishable from their predecessors.. It cost several million. I argued strongly for a less pedantic approach using the standard fonts which were closest to the designers' preferences, and retaining the existing kit until it reached its replacement date. That's certainly what I would have done if it had been my own business. I was over-ruled by management whose heads had been turned by the spin and hype of the marketing people. So we spent the money and wasted several man years of scarce resources whilst achieving absolutely nothing practical for the business. This is the kind of nonsense which led me to spend my last 20 years as an independent/freelance/mercenary rather than taking the shilling.

Interesting SIA have used their twitter account today to refer to FT highlighting Vietnam power crunch to emphasise the importance of oil and gas.

Good summary. FFDP and licence extension are important value drivers - and perhaps there are positive reserves implications?

Presentation from 11th September seems to show progress and a glimmer of light at the end of the Soco tunnel. Are things about to change here at long last? More at the link below but some points from it:

1) "Move the needle" mergers! (Looks good. Wonder how far the needle will move?)
2) New acreage = North Beni Suef. Block signing expected before end 2019.
3) $4 premium to Brent.
4) To maximise production cash flow: investing for short cycle payback periods and
increases in value.
5) To phase development spend: No large scale capital development needed, adds
flexibility to use of cash.
6) To continue to pay a regular dividend as part of financial framework; assessed
against growth offered by investment in asset base.
7) El Fayum - 16 – 17 wells anticipated for 2019.
8) El Fayum - 50 identified prospects and leads –15 high-graded.
9) El Fayum - Shallow Apollonia target test using a workover rig in Q4 2019.
10) SOCO is evaluating various options to optimise the crude-offtake and sales
arrangements in El Fayum for planning purposes.
11) Production of > 15,000 bopd could justify a pipeline tie-in to the Gulf of
Suez/Mediterranean line depending on crude quality.
12) TGT/CNV - Since the TGT deep Oligocene discovery, the JOC is now more inclined to
increase drilling activity, and a revised FFDP, which includes more wells, was
submitted July 2019. The FFDP is expected to be approved before year end.
This activity will be used to seek early confirmation of a TGT licence extension.
13) Isreal - 8 Blocks -Submitted application for eight blocks offer near large gas
fields. Two main play types: Tamar (Leviathan) clastic play and Zohr carbonate
play. First phase commitments are seismic studies only.
14) Capital Markets Day on the 29 October 2019.

Three-quarters of the day's volume being done in the closing auction (at the highs) bears out the stakebuild I think. I'd expect that to continue next week ahead of the Capital Markets Day....

The way the share is trading is a bit like the 5:2 diet.....gorge on big volumes for three days a week and fast for the other two.Suggests to me one institution is looking to build a position.
