... which looks life a value for the takeover at c364p for a DS Smith share. So if it's trading at a shade over 350p currently, then you're talking about a c 12-13p execution risk discount in the price to unwind.. plus a 12p dividend - or about 6-7% FV difference between buying DS Smith and buying International Paper shares direct on the NYSE.

Not much... hedgies and arbs will spot it and make the trade for the turn... but for private investors, unless you've a huge amount of capital to buy them and sell forward to lock it in, probably not worth the trade.... unless you'd be a buyer of International paper equity today, irrespective of the acquisition.

My tuppence, anyway...

#MCunliffe1, stopping a 30% WHT inside an ISA from US income is a no-go for me, I have been there and spent 2 years looking for workarounds arguing with Smart Investor on this point, the only way you can recover it is to get a tax document from your provider then declare the dividends on your self assessment and get a credit against taxes paid which I will be trying to do next month..

It is a PITA to have to do it inside an ISA wrapper which the US do not recognise, I was only 2/10 years into my holding here and try to keep things as simple as I can now, that said I took 121 pence per share out on a total return measure which helped ease the pain.. :o)

We will see if MNDI want it more than IP soon enough..

I think it's probably too early to sell in the market. I recall thinking the same when only the potential MNDI bid was on the table and I felt there was no hurry, having been in this situation repeatedly over the decades as an income investor. Not because I knew that a competing higher bid was coming, but because there's never any rush to act in bid situations when you're holding the target shares.

I don't want Mondi or IP shares in my income port so assuming a bid becomes certain, I will definitely sell out at some stage to reinvest in other HY shares, but imo the bidding war may well drive the price even higher. No guarantees but that's my present view and I appreciate that I'm taking a risk by continuing to hold. I think it unlikely, though not of course impossible, that both bids will fail.

Laurence, I think if an investor completes the W8-BEN form that the 30% can be avoided inside an ISA.... But the investor won't be able to reclaim the15% as there's no tax in an ISA.
Anyway, that's my understanding, (but I might be wrong) making USA dividend paying stocks somewhat unattractive within an ISA.

#Peart, no quite so, some ISA providers here are stopping 30% WHT (Smart Investor) even with a W8-BEN active, some stop 15% (ii), I try to avoid foreign parent companies listed in the US for this reason now having been caught out before, SIPP holders are zero rated though..

MNDI are UK listed, although they pay a dividend in EUR so this would be preferable for the UK ISA holder, and they are out in front in terms of having an agreement in principle already, but they might need to raise their price a little more now.. :o)

#Yump, nice in principle, but it does unlock the withholding tax problem for UK investors getting a 15/30% haircut on dividend income from US listings too should it proceed to an offer..?

Perhaps MNDI will up their bid on or before the 4th April deadline.. :o)

It has actually stayed in a very narrow range from 8th Feb right upto pm on 7th March. I would read from that, nothing is leaking and some investors are just speculating bets

"What to make of the 25 RNSs released Friday afternoon by both Mondi and DS Smith? Looks to me like just about all the major institutional investors have sold their holding in SMDS? I am not experienced in scenarios like this. What do the more experienced shareholders here think about all those RNSs? If there's no bid, Mondi would dump those shares into the market and SMDS share price would be back to 280p or lower before you know it."

Please take a deep breath.
We've been through this already.
Mondi have not been buying.
Institutional investors are making notifications of small changes in their shareholdings. As I explained one was for 13,000 shares, another 30,000 shares etc. Nobody has sold all of their shares or even close to. Click on the name of any of the shareholders. Scroll through the RNS's and compare their recent shareholding notification to the previous time that they noticed et voila you can see if they have bought or sold. In almost all instances it is for a very small amount of their total shareholding.

I hold SMDS only for the divis as I'm purely an income investor, know little about this industry and don't want to, same with all my holdings. Thinking outside the box you could say, not wanting to get in too close. So it's in the long term hold income port as part of the wide diversification strategy I follow, not because I'm enamoured with packaging.

Have held for a while and even with the possible bid now in the price, it's still slightly below cost, not that I care much about prices. All about the divis for me, share prices matter little in my approach.
