Monday will be interesting. There have been plenty of +ve anecdotes about the state of the construction industry over past months, and CD&R's proposed purchase of Wolesley may hint at designs on consolidating the UK building supplies market, but ...

…. "The second half of 2020 is expected to remain loss making, but at a lower rate than the first [half] despite some increased pressure on gross margin in the UK." (24/9/20 statement)

On turnover, in May SHI expected 2020 turnover to be £500 million lower than 2019 (ex Air Handling), but in September they guided modestly higher than that, so if we're given turnover figures we are expecting something better than £1,584 million, but not much.

The tone of presentation will presumably be watched closely. I'll be comparing it with what Steve Francis said back in September, something along the lines of:

“This is not an overnight turnaround, it's a rebuild which will take many months, and we don't expect financial benefits to show through until well into next year. The foundations are in place and we are highly confident of delivery in the medium term”.

Optimism among construction firms rose to its highest level in nearly four years last month, according to the latest CIPS/IHS Markit report.

Improving client demand and a boost for workloads from new wins on projects deferred at the start of the covid-19 pandemic saw the growth in order books remain close to November’s six-year high, when new orders increased at the fastest rate since October 2014.

New order levels increased in December for the seventh month in a row.....

Wolseley used to be a big FTSE 100 name until the company decided in 2017 it would rather be called Ferguson, in honour of its large US building materials business. Now Wolesley UK, the domestic distributor of heating and plumbing products, is departing and the disposal price ain’t much to shout about – £308m for an operation with turnover of £1.4bn.

The modest £6m of trading profit at the UK unit last year partly explains the lowly price. The abandonment of the original spinoff float plan also sent a weak price signal. And, in the midst of a pandemic, would-be trade buyers were probably thin on the ground. So the US private equity firm Clayton Dubilier & Rice looks to have had an easy run at this deal [buying Wolesley for £308 million]; it’s even been able to force Ferguson to keep the associated defined pension liabilities.

One can bemoan the arrival of opportunistic private equity money but, actually, it’s surely a good thing that somebody is prepared to take a punt that a cyclical UK business is still worth investing in.
