Swiss franc is safe haven

This is not out of line with the average for all advanced economies of a 6.1% decline this year and 4.5% growth next year. In the UK, the relative predictions are minus 6.5% and plus 4%.

As may be expected, the Swiss Market Index contains household-name companies from an economy renowned for high-quality products and services. There is food group Nestle, insurer Zurich and UBS bank. Electrical equipment and technology group ABB is included, as is pharmaceutical giant Novartis.

In all, the index covers about 80% of the total capitalisation of the Swiss stock market.
In its most recent Article IV health check for the Swiss economy, compiled before the coronavirus crisis but still highly relevant, the IMF said: “The Swiss economy has performed relatively well since the global financial crisis. Growth compares favourably with most other advanced countries and aggregate employment has grown robustly. The fiscal position is strong and the external trade surplus remains large and stable despite several episodes of intense appreciation pressure owing to the Swiss franc’s reputation as a safe haven.”

Swiss Voters Reject Plan to Limit Jobs for EU Citizens

GENEVA—Voters in Switzerland on Sunday strongly defeated a nationalist party’s proposal to limit the number of European Union citizens allowed to live and work in their country.

Swiss public broadcaster SRF reported that the measure was rejected by 61.7 percent of voters, with 38.3 percent in favor. All but four of the country’s 26 cantons, or states, likewise opposed the plan—proposed by the Swiss People’s Party—to give preferential access to jobs, social protection, and benefits to people from Switzerland over those from the 27-nation bloc that surrounds it.
