14.34 The first fuel-efficient Dreamliner plane touched down in Manchester this morning after Thomson finally took delivery of its initial aircraft. Thomson, owned by tour operator TUI, had hoped to start flying the 290-passenger Boeing 787 Dreamliner at the beginning of this month. Deliveries were halted after two Dreamliner planes operated by Japanese carriers caught fire in January and led to a grounding of the world's 787 fleet

Two separate pieces of news bring some relief for battered plane-builder Boeing . United 787s return to service Boeing 787 Battery Fix Lets Dreamliner Fly Again Matthew StibbeMatthew Stibbe Contributor United Airlines returned the 787 Dreamliner to service flying from Houston to Chicago on 20 May. The airline expects to launch international Dreamliner flights on a number of routes, including Denver-Tokyo, Houston-London, Los Angeles-Tokyo, Los Angeles-Shanghai and Houston-Lagos. Deliveries resume The company has just resumed deliveries of the new fuel-efficient airliner, reports Randy Tinseth, VP marketing at Boeing, in his blog. He also says that Boeing expects to make all of this year's planned deliveries despite the battery problems

No problems then. A United 787 flight which took off from Houston on Monday morning and landed in Chicago was the airline's first commercial flight with the Boeing Dreamliner since smoldering batteries forced the plane to be grounded worldwide. The planes were grounded for four months, because of smoldering batteries on 787s owned by other airlines which led to incidents including an emergency landing of one plane and a fire on another. Federal authorities lifted the grounding order on 19 April but it has taken Boeing and the airlines a few more weeks to fix most of them. The incidents did not cause any serious injuries, but the January grounding embarrassed Boeing and disrupted schedules at the eight airlines that were flying the planes. The company had delivered 50 Dreamliners worldwide. United is the only US airline currently flying the 787. The grounding forced it to delay planned international flights and reduced first-quarter earnings by $11m. Other airlines, including Japan Airlines and South America's LATAM Airlines Group, also said profits had taken a hit. LATAM said it still had to make payments on the plane and pay for crews and maintenance. It expects to resume flying soon. United is planning to use 787s on shorter domestic flights before resuming international flights on 10 June with a new Denver to Tokyo service, as well as temporary Houston to London flights. In August it will add flights to Tokyo, Shanghai and Lagos. Those long international flights are the main reason the 787 exists, as its medium size and fuel efficiency are a good fit for long routes

Aerospace engineer Senior said Thursday that since the start of the year trading has been positive in both the Aerospace and Flexonics divisions, with adjusted profit before tax for the first quarter coming in 'marginally' ahead of the board's expectations. However, net debt increased to £93m as a result of currency movements and the expected effect of increased activity. "Senior has started the year marginally ahead of expectations and the outlook for Senior's markets remains broadly consistent with the overall positive view described in its February 25th preliminary results announcement," the company said. "Consequently, having taken into consideration the continuing macro-economic uncertainty in a number of the group's operating countries and the potential for future volatility in the group's land vehicle markets and exchange rates, the board's expectation for 2013 full year adjusted profit before tax remains unchanged." Divisionally, Aerospace, which accounts for 66% of group sales, increased at an anticipated 'healthy' rate. Boeing and Airbus delivered a combined 281 aircraft in the first three months of 2013, ahead of the 268 aircraft delivered in the same period of 2012, despite Boeing delivering only one B787 aircraft in the period due to its temporary grounding. Build rates for its main defence programmes declined largely as anticipated, whilst overall volumes in the regional and business jet markets were relatively stable. The Flexonics division performed well, with the effect of a continued softening in demand for passenger vehicles in Europe offset by healthy volumes of Senior's products for North American heavy trucks and improved manufacturing efficiencies. The group said overall its principal industrial operations performed broadly as anticipated in the first quarter, with sales of large expansion joints and fuel cell products ahead of expectation but its business in Brazil was affected by delays in order-placement. Senior Plc said it had started the year marginally ahead of expectations and that its expectation for full-year adjusted pretax profit remains unchanged. "The outlook for Senior's markets remains broadly consistent with the overall positive view described in its 25 February preliminary results announcement," the company said. Commenting on trading so far this year, Senior said it had been positive in both the Aerospace and Flexonics Divisions, with the group's adjusted profit before tax, partially assisted by beneficial currency movements, marginally ahead of the board's expectations
