Oh dear, bad timing on this one. Nevermind, reckon I bought low enough though , to hold on. If these go a lot lower JDG will be sniffing around for sure.

A comment in today’s Investors’ Chronicle about Judges Scientific ( the much bigger comparator Company , with which SDI is often compared ) includes the following : “ Judges has cautioned that the coronavirus pandemic will impede scientific conventions and its ability to travel to customers , producing a knock-on effect on order book , sales and installations . Orders have already slowed over the first 10 weeks of 2020 compared with last year . It believes the hit to earnings will be limited should the outbreak only last another two months , but the impact would be “ more significant “ thereafter “ . I sold out here at 70p , and am awaiting a time to get back . However , even with today’s slight increase in the share price , it is down more than half from its recent peak of about 90p . Good luck all .

That's business. And today's awards amount to a total £170k of shares at the current price, which isn't exactly highly material.

For the job that the management here have done, the total 3.9m options now in issue between the CEO, Chairman and CFO - again, dependent on EPS and "Total shareholder return" - seems pretty reasonable to me.

Much better if they had based this on say the average share price over the last year.

It comes over as incredibly greedy to take this action now... ...basically as though they are seeking to increase their personal wealth on the back of people round the world undergoing severe suffering.

The point being that the LTIP grant is partly conditional on "total shareholder return", including the share price.

So it follows that the directors might believe that this is the most advantageous share price low point they will achieve.

And (obvs) they have far more knowledge about how the company is performing than shareholders do.

It's a handout, Rivaldo; they're not putting their hands in their pockets.

Truth is SDI will likely bottom out when the market in general bottoms out and the directors know as much about that as we do.

I wonder if the decision to make some more (well-deserved) LTIP grants to management signals that SDI believe this should be the bottom for the share price:

0.8x net debt/ebitda at end of April is forecast which is very manageable. Arguably would like to see them take advantage of market conditions if they see stuff they like at knockdown valuations.

Reassuring update from JDG today saw the stock finish higher (at least today) despite the much higher valuation. I like SDI a lot at these levels as don't think they will have seen a significant earnings impact yet, and its a good diversified group of businesses that should be able to weather a macro storm pretty well.

Had these on the watch list, but as with a lot of things, difficult to know where the bottom is.

Debt is probably around 1x EBITDA say, which isnt excessive, but will tighter lending conditions restrict their growth?

Would be good to see one of the directors buy a meaningful number of shares to show a vote of confidence, esp the Chairman who sold at 2x the price in late 2019!!

On sub 10x earnings now. Amazing price action compared to JDG and think it's down to a clearly more skittish retail shareholder base here. Even if you haircut earnings in their year starting may by 20%, it's on 12.2x P/E. Less than 10x headline numbers without the cuts
