Because growing primarily through acquisition is challenging. When you have groups like Halma valued at £10bn and you have SDI valued at £200m,the latter could be an attractive target for the likes of the former.Pure speculation on my part.

Its not why i bought this company but i suspect that at sometime in the future,SDI could attract a bid or merge, history suggests this could happen one day.

SDI are one of the two main tips/"Great Ideas" in today's Shares Magazine in a page-length feature.

They conclude that SDI trades at a 16% discount to JDG, and:

"We see this gap narrowing and mid-teens earnings growth to keep pushing SDI’s share price higher."

The main thrust of the article sees SDI as a mini-Halma, acquiring good value businesses "that add consistent cash flow and profits to the overall group."

And:

"Its share price jumped 33% on 10 February after telling the market that it would smash forecasts. The company secured material follow-on orders for its Atik cameras business, proving kit for real-time PCR DNA amplifiers, clever medical kit that allows us to test for Covid infection by studying genetic code.

Given that the Covid-19 strain is stubbornly sticking around, and may do for some time, there could be plenty more PCR test-based orders over the coming months, but SDI has plenty of other opportunities beyond the pandemic.

For example, the near-£7 million acquisition of Monmouth Scientific last year provides a range of clean air solutions to healthcare and science customers, such as clean rooms, which could take SDI into the booming semiconductors space."

Good for Ken and worth remembering that following his last sale of £250k at 78p, the shares subsequently moved higher as positive news and progress continued.

Ken Ford is 70 i think.I'm always a tad disappointed to see "insider" selling (as they call management trades in the USA).Whichever way you look at it,the seller has made a decision that the money invested might be better employed elsewhere, for whatever reason. However, looks to me that the sale might have been crossed and i'll be interested to see if a new institution has joined the register.Hopefully.The company is now of a size to attract serious institutional interest and as we all know, life sciences is very much " in the zone " right now.

Ken Ford has sold 500,000 shares today - it is rather pleasing to see him being able to offload them at 183.15p - means there was a buyer available. Group Annual Reports don't seem to report ages of directors anymore. Ken has been Chairman since 2012 and on the board since 2010. There are loads of possible reasons for the sale and not necessarily negative. Massive daily volume reported. It will be interesting to see how the share price goes tomorrow given the peculiar response this morning. Ken still has 750,000 shares which is still a sizeable holding. Fils

We tend to forget that sdi, like jdg, is also about earnings enhancing acquisitions.

Not easy calculating eps when you have an acquisitive group like SDI.Once we have the R&A for the year to end April 21,it'll be easier. However, consensus forecasts for eps to April 22 were around 7p and given the 10% beat here on the Feb estimates,I'm happy to extrapolate something approaching 8p despite the company's understandable reluctance to raise expectations for the current year after only a month of trading.Ken Ford used to work in the research department of Wedd Durlacher in the 1970s (before his posts at Morgan Grenfell and others). He'll be cannier than most at managing expectations. The last thing you want to do is over promise, you make a rod for your own back.

Steeplejack, I’m not sure 8p is correct.

EPS after tax and their guidance is before tax. I’m coming in at EPS guidance closer to 6.5p, though I’m confident they can beat that.

It's likely just the day traders from yesterday taking profits. The ones who got in first may actually have made a decent turn for once. But we know from experience here that the long-term trend here is...up :o))

Back of the envelope estimates suggest eps of around 8p for the year to end April 2022 meaning the shares trade on a prospective PE of around 24.That's fair enough.Shares leapt yesterday afternoon so a fairly muted response is not that surprising this morning. The PEG is around 1,cashflow strong, the shares could push on to around £2 in due course.(I've given up trying to guess how the market will react to results on the day.)

10% over the Feb PBT forecast of £6.7 million. I'm sure we'll all take that. For full year ending April '22 - difficult to conceive there won't be any earnings enhancing acquisitions between then and now. The £8.7 million forecast may well be challenged in a nice way! Not even one complete month in yet. Fils
