ASML opened very strongly, major SMT holding, Semiconductor shortage beginning to be priced in, could have an impact here.

This is not a traditional economic restart. There was a general rotation to cyclicals and value based stocks, thats the default setting. The froth has been skimmed off the tech stocks, which is healthy. It looks like most institutional investors are hedging their bets at the moment, March/April is generally a time of rebalance. Interesting enough for me most are still overweight US exposure and Tech.

bond yields still falling but it has not helped the nasdaq which is pain - so much for that theory ! But has not fallen as much as other US indices in this bearish market lately .

surprising it is off so much with bond prices rising and the nasdaq only off a bit but bearish mood in overall market . chart support at 1136 level and could well rally soon .

as always SMT is a great trading stock as it usually reacts quite quickly to nasdaq movements although trading the index might be even better bet . I went for ATT after it's intra day dip but wish I had focused more on SMT ! ( wry smile ) .

...not to forget that our Cathie at ARK is pumping her own book again with new research saying that Tesla's worth US$1 trillion a share (or something) over the weekend. Funny how that note coincided with talk of China increasing scope of ban on Tesla sales (25% of market). Cathie sure does a great job of ramping it for retail. Bizarre that anyone takes heed of any research from a fund with a huge vested interest in its biggest holding increasing in value - but I guess that's the modern way...

sorry- wrong thread for that article . SMT likely to open higher today on back of nasdaq futures rise and bond yields falling .

Industry seems fairly relaxed over Anderson stepping down

James Anderson announced he would be retiring last year. Its no surprise at all. What a fantastic manager he has been, with his insight, loyalty and steadfastness to buck the normal trends he will be missed.Interestingly I listened to his most recent update on SMT and his thoughts were do not underestimate the importance of scale. SMT, Ballie Gifford don't need to knock on so many doors as they used to. The Musks of the future come looking for them. Never underestimate how far trust and loyalty can get you in the cut throat world of investing.

If I were him I'd do the same thing - even if the tech bubble doesn't correct significantly (which as everyone know I personally think it will) it's hard to see the performance SMT has delivered (or any tech-focused fund for that matter) being able to deliver such super-normal returns over the coming years. Great opportunity to retire with an impeccable track record.

James Anderson's record is absolutely amazing. I'm grateful to him. What was 10% of my retirement fund is now over 30%.

I think it was an advantage to him being based outside of the London bubble, in Edinburgh. He was one of the first people to spot that the FTSE 100 is/was really an index of divi-paying dogs without a future, and to realise that the the real upside would be from rising US and Chinese companies on either side of the Pacific.

Retirement of James Anderson announced - not unexpected. I hope he can go out on a high as he has done more for the wealth of UK private investors than the vast majority of other fund managers. And I have to add that he has done a lot for my financial education with his way of looking at the changing world and where investment profits can be made - and I am the same age and have a City background.

good move hartley and especially as nasdaq dipped after UK close even though bond yields fell - market must think they will rise again soon. BUT SMT seems to be an exception at times and I could not understand the strong rally yesterday !

@arja. I sold at 1155p - don't know why I even bothered - just glad to get away with it. Reckless/amateur - I need to wait for clearer signals rather than flip a coin territory.

well, I have noticed that SMT moves almost religiously in line with nasdaq futures
movement but more in % terms today . nasdaq close to chart support at 12950 and nasdaq is affected by US T bond yield . Anyway , good luck with it and remember to sell on rally and buy on dip - I sometimes fail to do that and got my timing wrong with RMG today which has a lovely uptrending chart surprisingly ¬

maybe you have a point Hartley but I just keep am eye on the US T bond which is falling further and dragging down these tach investment trusts . So be very careful as paper losses are REAL losses .
