Many positives in today's update apart from the obvious "moderately ahead of expectations"

Even with the strength of the pound as you point out modform, there is also the additional benefit to profit after tax from the US tax cuts and increased R&D tax credits.

There are also continuing benefits to come from the acquisitions over the past 3 years which have been bought on very good term and are very earnings enhancing. For example SDI trades on an historic PSR at 1.86 and net margin of 12.89%, below are the figures for the major acquisitions at the time of purchase. This also gives confidence in managements ability to negotiate further earning enhancing acquisitions.

Sentek, PSR - 0.77 and net margins of 15.38%
Astles, PSR - 2.5 and net margins of 36.4%
Applied Thermal - PSR - 1.0 and net margins of 10%

Rivaldo - Let us hope Universal's success continues with them picking a winner with SDI. A 5.2% stake is not inconsiderable. Any ideas who they acquired this from? A very positive development and potentially underpins the share price at its current level. Fils

And all above current guidance note

Which is why the next guidance ... after results IMO should reflect

1. the new strategy for growth ie buying smaller cap profitable companies yearly
2. chosing such acquisitions that provide ''fits' for the group ie x selling
3. are now achieving double %ages in turnover and profits numbers
4. are attracting a decent mix of Institutional investors
5. are establishing a great UK group of scientific based engineering/chemical co's

Hence I propose 45p for next year till interims have been declared

The ProReveal protein residue detection system is the only one currently available on the market today that can detect prion protein which is left on surgical instruments AFTER going through a cleaning procedure.

Prion proteins cause many different TSE type diseases in animals , and some of these diseases have been transmitted to humans by eating the meat of those animals.

Prion diseases are lethal in ALL cases , animals and humans ... no cure exists , no vaccine has worked on animals either.

The only thing that has been done is to eradicate the infected animals by burning them in deep pits dug into the earth.

Prions can survive 200 degrees centigrade for a 2 hour duration and still be contagious. They can also dry out and stay active in the ground for over 30 years and longer ... how long nobody knows yet.

Prions , besides being transmitted on dirty surgical instruments , or eating meat , ( needs to be cooked for longer than 2 hours at over 200 degrees centigrade ) , can also be transmitted to humans by infected blood via transfusions and contaminated organs via transplants , also via dirty contaminated dental equipment.

There are other methods of transmission ... but I will try to keep this missive brief

Another animal species has just been added to the list

One whose milk many drink , and whose meat is eaten , this time a new continent, Africa

Africa now has its own potential BSE equivalent , so another form of prion disease now possible, the risk to humans of prion disease has just gone up ... again

A neurodegenerative disease discovered on camels in Ouargla

15 April 2018

A scientific study carried out by the Italian Higher Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità, ISS) in collaboration with the universities of Tlemcen and Ouargla has led to the discovery of a new prion disease on camels of the region of Ouargla, reports the Outbreak News Today website.

Prion diseases (pathogenic protein) are life-threatening neurodegenerative diseases that can affect animals and humans, such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease or Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), the common name of which is disease of the liver. Mad Cow).

The neurological symptoms seen in dromedaries precisely recalled those of mad cow disease, leaving Algerian researchers suspect that it would be a prion disease. Suspicions were confirmed by laboratory tests carried out by researchers at the Italian Health Institute. Symptoms suggestive of prion disease appeared in 3.1% of dromedaries brought to the slaughterhouse of Ouargla during the 2015-2016 period.

The new disease has been dubbed "Camel Prion Disease".

The relatively high frequency of the disease and the involvement of the lympho-reticular system suggest that it is a communicable disease within the species and widespread in the region, says the study.

"The discovery of a new prion disease in an animal species with economic and food value in large areas of the planet raises important issues of public health and food security," said Gabriele Vaccari, head of ISS.

"Camel rearing is widespread throughout North and Central Africa, as well as in the Middle East, Asia and Australia, and is an important element in the economy of many populations. In many areas, camels are used for the production of milk and meat for human consumption, "said the researcher.

The results of the investigation so far suggest that the prion disease affecting the camel is different from BSE, with the cow being the only animal to have so far shown that its disease could be transmitted to humans with more than 200 deaths in different parts of the world, says the study. Nevertheless, the risk to humans is currently unknown, and a thorough investigation is needed to clarify its zoonotic potential, say the researchers.

Over 15 NHS hospitals SSD's (sterile services departments ) now have this instrument installed and working

The DOH (Department of Health) has mandated that a large proportion of NHS Hospials must have a test instrument in place by the end of july 2018 to test for protein residue to specified limits.

ProReveal is the only one available

However the BIG market worldwide ... is when CWD in the USA , from deer, elk and moose jumps the species barrier into man ( IMO it has , but has not yet been diagnosed as CWD ( a prion disease) .

THE WORLD HEALTH Organization, the CDC, Health Canada, and the departments of health and natural resources in Wisconsin and other states including Minnesota, Colorado, Mississippi, Illinois, North Dakota, and South Dakota aren’t waiting for more studies: All recommend that no one eat the meat of any prion-infected deer.

In April 2017, Canada’s Bureau of Microbial Hazards posted an advisory entitled, “Potential Human Health Risks from Chronic Wasting Disease.”

The reason: CWD has been transmitted in the laboratory to cynomolgus macaque monkeys. Both infected brain and muscle tissues were found to transmit disease. The probability of transmission to cattle, sheep, goats and humans consuming infected meats — and crops, from corn to cabbages, contaminated by infected deer feces and urine — is considerable. Concerted action is called for at this time to prevent such a potentially catastrophic eventuality.

IMO the orders for ProReveal should then rocket , camels have now thrown out another chance of transmission

30% plus younger people are now becoming vegans each year

ProReveal Testimonial - Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust

“We purchased a ProReveal in May 2017 because we needed a user-friendly in-situ protein detection method to comply with the new Department of Health regulations on testing reprocessed surgical instruments. Since using the ProReveal, we have identified areas for improvement in our processes and instruments that we can’t clean. This has helped us to get our decontamination process to routinely clean to less than 5 micrograms of residual protein per instrument side, which we’re very pleased with.”

“The ProReveal is great technology and is easy to use as it guides us step by step. In fact, we like it so much that we often show the ProReveal to visitors to our department. The best thing about having a ProReveal is that we don’t have to rely on subjective judgement calls if there are process issues because we have traceable, quantitative data to assure us that the surgical instruments we’re sending back to be used on patients are safe and fit for purpose.”

Alison Gee, Sterile Services and Stores Manager, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, Nottingham, UK."

Note from buywell

As far as we know 15 NHS Trusts now have ProReveal installed and working

My read of things is that the DoH want all SSD's (200) to have an instrument that can test to a limit of 5 micrograms of residual protein per instrument side in place by the end of this july 2018

Re the Nottingham NHS SSD glowing testimonial plus the recent rise in turnover and profits for SDI(fundamentals) in the last 2 years and current chart shape and TA which all bode well IMO.

One gets the feeling that the role of Sterile Service Departments (SSD's) within the NHS is one that is growing.

As more data and understanding about Prion disease , prion proteins, and the threat they pose to humans , then the role of SSD's will most likely rise some more.

Remember Prion Proteins stick to surgical instruments ... and can then pass on lethal diseases to the next patient that uses a dirty surgical instrument with prion protein residue present

ProReveal is the ONLY current instrument for sale that meets current Department of Health (DoH) requirements for NHS SSD measurement of residual proteins on surgical instruments AFTER they have gone through the SSD decontamination/sterilisation/washing/cleaning processes after use in an operation.

Decontamination and sterile services - NHS Health Careers

There are over 200 hundred sterile services departments in England (an average sterile services department will employ 30 staff), with the majority working within the NHS and some working within the Private Sector.

28 Dec 2017 - It is also easier for the department to build relationships and problem solve with the colleagues they have served from a distance for so many years, so we are so pleased to welcome the sterile services team into their new home.” Since the move, the SSD has processed around 13,222 trays, and 10,188 ...
