Lets keep our minds focused here , what I am endeavouring to do is ascertain just how BIG a problem the USA has re CJD, vCJD, all other forms of CJD , and CWD as the uSA call it.

Basically ANYTHING that carries prions which seem to be with current thinking , the root cause of the diseases so ... read on:-


Whilst the USA have escaped their own CJD domestic problems regarding the eating of contaminated BSE Beef

They have their own domestic equivalent CJD problem which has gone unchecked and untested which could be much worse than the UK CJD problem ever was ... that of eating CJD infected Deer and Elk.

IMO in the coming year or the one that follows the USA will get a sudden wake up call of their own, here is why:-

OK in the above the USA article does call it CJD but it also has another name which I shall discuss in the next post

The cause of CJD is not known
But Sporadic CJD is more common

The genetic make up of a person determines the form of CJD one develops




Jan 2017 event now proves that there is going to be more than one form of vCJD

Not enough research or testing has been done yet , but new modern DNA testing technologies now mean genetic mutations can be matched with new forms of CJD.

For now variants have been grouped as one called vCJD

We will soon discover there are more

IMO all will be linked with the eating of either animal or vegetable prion infected food

As I will post on later

Suffice to say what we are concerned with here on SDI is

Iatrogenic CJD

Iatrogenic CJD (iCJD) is where the infection is spread from someone with CJD through medical or surgical treatment.

One assumes those that came up with the above lumped in vCJD

There is also another form which we need to talk about

No, of course they are related.

They both derive from eating infected meat

No they do not. Only vCJD derives from BSE. There is no evidence linking the main (non variant) form of CJD to meat (or any other cause). There is also a third form which is genetic and inherited.

The great majority of CJD cases are the non variant type, and have no known link with infected meat.

Worryingly there has been a twist , a new development that the old tests carried out did not pick upWhat twist?It doesn't matter how many people carry the vCJD prion if it never develops into vCJD. The evidence from the pattern of deaths 20 years on (a 6-8 year peak of around 20 deaths pa, followed by deaths tailing off to around 1 every 2-3 years now) suggests that for the vast majority it will never develop.I'm not suggesting CJD or tests to detect protein on instruments are not important, they are and I've made it clear I think so. But there is little value in scare mongering about vCJD.Ordinary CJD (non vCJD, non BSE related) is a far bigger issue and kills far more people, and is as prevalent in the US and elsewhere as here, and has been for a long time. That does matter, and ProReveal can help with that - to bring this back to the thread.Peter

Many more people could still die from mad cow disease in the UK






Now my point is re these recent posts

vCJD has NOT gone away it can lie dormant for decades or take effect very slowly

We just do not know enough about it

Except it can be transmitted by contaminated surgical instruments that have not been cleaned properly and checked properly

Worryingly there has been a twist , a new development that the old tests carried out did not pick up

The old tests came up with 1 in 2000 vCJD carriers

A new test is needed which now could show a much worse result maybe 1 in a 1000

Twice as many Britons as previously thought could be carrying the human form of "mad cow" disease, variant CJD.
Researchers believe one in 2,000 people in the UK is a carrier of the disease linked to eating contaminated beef.

Their estimate in the BMJ comes from studying more than 32,000 samples of human tissue removed during appendix operations carried out between 2000 and 2012 at 41 hospitals.

It remains unclear if any of these carriers will ever develop symptoms.
Early predictions of a vCJD epidemic didn't come to fruition.
To date, here have been 177 UK deaths from vCJD. Most of these occurred in the late 90s and early 2000s.

There has been only one death in the last two years.

Meantime re the USA sitting on a Brit imported vCJD ticking timebomb

What I did not include in my last post re around 1.25M ex pat BRITS living in the states

On top of that over 4M Brits travel to the USA each year

Out of that number based upon 1 in 2000 being vCJD carriers

2000 Brits travelling in the USA every year will be vCJD carriers

How many of them has an accident needing an operation using surgical instruments ?

..... it is there and America are unaware

Possibly, but if it is it's ticking very slowly!

No one knows how many people who carry the protein go on to develop vCJD. However, we do know that incidences of vCJD peaked between 1996-2004 and have dropped right off since (one reported case in the UK in 2013 and one in 2016, none till June 2017).

So either the % who go on to develop vCJD is very small, or the latency is very long - likely longer than the average lifetime for most of the carriers.

Non variant CJD deaths (non BSE related) are far more common, and that is not localised to the UK, there will be plenty already in the US carrying that protein.

The need for systems like Pro Reveal that can show up the presence of prions and related proteins on surgical equipment, and things like dentists drills, is global, and vCJD is only a small part of the reason.

From the individual health point of view worries about the prevalence of the vCJD prion should probably be minimal. From the investment point of view ProReveal clearly has a massive potential market.

It gets worse

1.3 million ex-pat Brits live in the USA and Canada – the same number as can be found in Australia. 24% of Brits in the USA are thought to be pensioners. 2,500 Britons live part of their year in Mexico.

My number of 150 is way off in the post above ... make it 1000


Conclusion:

Now ask yourself how many Brits have gone to the USA to live ?

I think the USA have no idea whatsover as to how many USA citizens are vCJD carriers

Because unlike here , I don't think they have carried out the tests to look.

They think that Yanks don't have it .... but Brits have taken it to the Yanks

Globalisation in action .... share and share alike

How many of those UK vCJD carriers , and at 1 in 2000 there must be more than 150 carriers , how many of those 150 have had operations involving surgical instruments whilst in the USA ?

And if there are 200k to 300k Brit expats in the states ... can the USA Hospitals risk not having an up to date protein residual testing regime in place ?

Been in SDI a while now but can someone explain the relationship between Mathew Peskett and SDI - why is he presenting Proreveal at that Decontamination Conference and not Synoptics itself? Does Peskett have an interest in sales of Proreveal?

True, particularly applicable to surgical instruments that are already contaminated. Hard to believe that one but apparently a common and increasing problem.

Not hard to believe, the problem has been well known, which is why a lot of surgical instruments are not reused. Things like prions, which are involved with CJD are pretty much indestructible with available sterilisation techniques, and one of the big problems has been lack of ways to check if they are present or not. Hence proreveal, and anything else that will do the same job is pretty important, and valuable, worldwide.

Scotland might be thought to be a better place to have an NHS operation , a lot of Scots are surprisingly quite intelligent , and there is not too many of them ... yet

How wrong ... this might have been discussed on here before my coming

The story today of the level of carelessness in the crucial matter of the sterilisation of surgical equipment emanating from the pan-Glasgow decontamination unit at Cowlairs, is simply numbing.

To hear surgeons talk of often having to go through three packets of theatre equipment returned from this facility as ready for use, before finding a safely usable one, is a matter than cannot be left there.

It is no use to hear a Director of Glasgow and Clyde NHS talk tonight of improvements already in place, and reassuring the sick and worried public that all will now be well.

This simply cannot be correct – cannot be correct.

The complaining surgeons, from Gartnavel Hospital – but they will be everywhere, seeing operations cancelled for lack of surgical instruments that are clean and safe to use on patients, have made it clear that their previous complaints achieved no improvement whatsoever in the performance of this critical unit.

Any unit with a culture SO disgracefully slack, in its practices and in its attitudes absolutely cannot be bettered over night by a pep talk and a PR attempt.
This situation needs a root and branch assault on fundamental matters like responsibility; training; constant supervision; clean premises, equipment and working practices.








'Dirty instruments' delayed operations at Gartnavel Hospital

Orthopaedic operations at a Glasgow hospital were delayed because surgical equipment was deemed "not safe".

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde confirmed that planned orthopaedic surgery at Gartnavel General Hospital was postponed last month.

This was due to concern over the "quality and quantity" of instruments. More than 200 procedures were affected. NHS bosses said they had reviewed the processes used and surgery had now resumed on a phased basis.

Dr Jean Turner from the SPA said the situation was unforgivable.
She added: "I think it is horrifying when we have been fighting against infections and fighting to get waiting lists down and patients are suffering because they're having an operation cancelled that they've long desired.
"Instruments that are obviously dirty and obviously unfit for purpose stand out but it does make you wonder what is the standard of this central decontamination sterilising unit."

I was chatting to a NHS Consultant in January who had been in charge of all the operating theatres of a NHS trust regarding Pro-Reveal and current operating practices. He said reusable surgical instruments were routinely disposed of because of the CJD threat. I've no idea of the economics but it appears to make a pretty compelling case for NHS trusts to purchase Pro-Reveal equipment.
