01/11/2018 10:42 | I hope they haven't become complacent! They had expected the amendments to take 6-8 months and that was 17 months ago. News of any one of 3 licences could come at any time although I don't expect anything from Mozambique until the FS is completed. The Omanis must be close to finding all the documents by now! I'd like to think they may have started discussions but are probably just starting to discuss when to start the discussions! From the snippets we're being fed I feel work is being done on the groundwork to progress Mina do Barroso. The FS is needed anyway before production. Looking oversold again so nibbled a few. | ged5
01/11/2018 09:20 | How long have we been waiting for a mining licence from the Portuguese government.? If they takes as long as the corrupt Spanish, we've a long long wait. | reba

30/10/2018 12:46 | cont'd Spodumene stores to a large extent near the surface, not more than 120 meters deep. It is planned to crush the rock on site and increase the oxide content from 1 to 6 percent. From the concentrate, the industry could win the salt, carbonate or hydroxide it needs. Batteries for 275,000 to 550,000 electric cars can be produced from the production of each year, says Archer, who estimates the planned investments at 110 million euros. He expects to create around 150 direct jobs and three to four times as many indirect jobs. The state should not benefit only in the form of taxes. He also receives a 3% share in the value of the subsidized material. Lithium carbonate prices have doubled in the past two years, but have tended to weaken in recent years due to oversupply. How they will develop is a very good question for Archer. However, it is clear to him that demand should continue to increase. Not only Savannah is interested in lithium from Portugal, which praises the government as an ideal location for its promotion. More than forty companies - including from Australia, Canada and the USA - are interested in these deposits. This year, the government is planning a tender for licenses, in which it wants to favor applicants with further projects. | ged5
30/10/2018 12:35 | Latest tweet on website:- "The growing demand for emission-free cars is fueling the business with the lithium needed for their batteries. This is also felt by Portugal as Europe's largest supplier of raw materials." The earth near the town of Boticas, which lies dormant in Portugal's high north, was already in demand because of many treasures. When Napoleon's troops approached in the early 19th century, the fear of plunder by French soldiers was rampant in the villages. In order to bring their wine to safety, some residents buried their bottles and barrels. When they exhumed them later, they were surprised to find that the red wine tasted better than before - and made the experience a tradition. In the village, there is still in small quantities the "vinho dos mortos", the wine of the dead. More than 200 years after Napoleon's invasions, it is all about mineral resources of a different kind: The British company Savannah Resources plans in the district of Boticas, the production of lithium, which stores there in large quantities. Lithium is also known as "happy metal," says Savannah boss David Archer, because it is included in some antidepressants. So far, it has also been used in the ceramics industry as well as in batteries of laptops and mobile phones. But what drives demand is above all the booming demand for this light metal for the batteries of electric cars. So, the Savannah boss wants to quickly start funding in Portugal. Savannah would become the largest producer of lithium in Europe, says Archer in an interview in Lisbon. Previously, the interest in Boticas was more the feldspar than the lithium. It was not until May 2017 that Savannah acquired from another company an earlier license to research and mine these deposits. There is still a 10-person team working with holes on site. According to Archer, this is probably the most extensive drilling for mineral resources that Portugal has experienced in decades. In the first half of 2019, a study on the economics of mining is expected. Archer is "very confident" in this regard. After about nine months for technical preparations and after examining the project in terms of environmental aspects, the production of lithium-containing spodumene in the "Mina do Barroso" could start in the first half of 2020. Among the world's largest producers of lithium are Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Australia. Portugal would probably not break its dominance, but it is already among the top ten producers and has the largest known reserves in Europe. In 2017, a government-appointed group of experts identified nine deposits in Portugal, all in northern parts of the country. She estimated the occurrence of spodumene at Boticas at around 14 million tonnes. Savannah estimates these now at 20 million tonnes. According to Archer, they could reach 29 to 35 million tons, enough for mining for up to twenty years. | ged5

28/10/2018 19:04 | Hopefully we’ll be right in the middle of things as they get up to speed, yorkie... 'To address the scarcity of raw materials, the EU plans to recover some from recycling old electronics and has also begun mapping European mineral deposits. The bloc has cobalt, lithium, graphite and nickel deposits in France, Finland, Portugal, Spain and the Czech Republic, said Mr Sefcovic' | paleje

26/10/2018 07:50 | Interesting piece from Roskill. The EU is today reacting through its "Battery Alliance" program to the disruptive threat of transport electrification. Large and established European chemical players, such as Umicore and BASF, are well positioned to supply future European battery cell manufacturers with refined materials. Access to battery raw materials, however, remains a challenge for the European large-scale battery industry in contrast with Asian companies. Tesla and Northvolt were the only 'Western' companies present among the twenty-two lithium deals closed between battery-makers and miners since 2009. Since 2017, nine cobalt deals and seven nickel deals have been closed without the presence of a 'Western' battery comp.Presume they will be on the look out for suppliers then? | inbrackets
25/10/2018 21:32 | Certainly true that any news on Oman has not tended to land on a Friday, but every now and then, other projects or general information bits have been known to feature.Outside of SAV there seems to be a wealth of such incredibly positive news, either regards difficulties or likely shortages in supply, or potential for future demand, not just EV but increasingly in helping towards an integrated energy storage and supply network across the world. Meanwhile, at close hand Europe needs to play catch up, big style as China Bolt has a substantial head start.Excellent article in the Telegraph today giving a perfectly understandable explanation for Dyson setting up his first factory in Singapore and explaining the existing eu carmakers woes. | inbrackets
25/10/2018 09:17 | Thanks IB and teemore, what you both say makes sense. reba, you mentioned places to visit in Yorkshire, when I visited Harrogate earlier this year, so I thought you were from there. I posted an article about an increase in charging stations for EVs in Scarborough. Well another week without ML news (rarely do they issue an RNS on Friday). November next week so no chance of production this year. That feeling of imminent news is dissipating! | ged5
23/10/2018 12:36 | Rehabilitation of drill sites is not expensive, but good housekeeping and required under environmental protection- it also helps when looking for a mining licence! | teemore

23/10/2018 10:32 | Ged, hi. The drill pads have been used to help assess the extent and size of the deposits. With a life of mine of 10 yr plus, many will not form part of the mine for many a year, and not at all for those on the boundary. As the drone footage shows, for those with different eyes, they could be regarded as mini blots on the landscape and restitution forms part of any responsible mining plan. With some groups looking to itemise the activities of nasty mining groups, it would seem to make sense to show at outset that SAV does take its Eco responsibilities seriously now and for the future.Imo, but may give a reasonable rationale.See that Bacanora have been successful with the Omani SWF for Lithium. For their sakes, I hope that any decisions are more forthcoming but perhaps explains why they invest abroad. | inbrackets
23/10/2018 09:00 | Yes, I don't get the rationale behind that. Seems a strange thing to do at this stage. But it is a community letter so perhaps it's addressing concerns of the locals. What has Oman to do with SAV? | ged5
23/10/2018 08:41 | I’m a Leeds lad so a strong Yorkshire contingent here! Have to laugh about drill site rehab; for goodness sake, we’re hopefully be mining in 18 months so don’t waste cash on putting it all back to enable the weeds to grow! Speaking of weeds, Tumbleweed on the Oman ML front....😴 | highly geared
23/10/2018 08:10 | Also from the drilling section:- "Diamond drilling continued at Grandao to collect material for metallurgical testing in Portugal, Germany and Australia." | ged5
23/10/2018 08:07 | Especially for you and Reba, yorkie! Still no ML licence news! October newsletter in the community section of the SAV website. Done in September:- "• Exploration activities continued with reverse circulation drilling and diamond drilling at Grandão and Pinheiro • Work progressed on the collection of baseline data needed to support the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the project including archaeological assessments • Engineering consultants visited site to advise on the technical aspects of the proposed project infrastructure requirements including the locations of the main items" To be done in October:- "During the month of October Savannah will be continuing to conduct RC drilling and diamond at the Grandão, and Pinheiro. A programme of drill site rehabilitation will commence during the month to remove drilling material from the drill areas and prepare the locations for natural revegetation during the cooler, winter months." Well at least it's something while we wait for the main event. | ged5
22/10/2018 17:13 | Don't be so cheeky Ged ! I'm still here in the background..... | yorkie14 |
