WASHINGTON (AFX) - Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage told lawmakers
the government will allow and pay for non-essential diplomats and their families
to leave all posts in China, including the embassy in Beijing due to fears of
the rampant spread of SARS (Severe Acute Respitory Syndrome).
However, a State Department official said the embassy and the consulates
will remain open for business.
Armitage said he has signed orders expanding the State Department's
so-called authorized departure programs from the consulates in Hong Kong and
Guangzhou to Washington's other four diplomatic missions in China.
In China, the expansion means that non-essential diplomats and the families
of all embassy and consulate personnel in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and
Shenyang may leave at government expense, the State Department official said.
"We are concerned about the health effects of SARS and we are taking this as
a precautionary measure," the official said.
In addition, Armitage said the the programs may be implemented at other US
embassies and consulates in countries badly hit by SARS.
"We are looking at others," he told a House budget subcommittee, noting that
aside from the missions in China, the department is already allowing family
members of US diplomats posted in Vietnam to leave the country.

There is a serious outbreak of exclamation marks and capital lettered words and coloured text, spreading across the BBs faster than science can cope with. It will surely arrive on a thread near you very very soon.

I think Hyper Al is the source.

"its not very contagious" - wrong

"have you caught aids yet ?" - what has that got to do with it?

OK you don't care, so just go and work for the BBC then!

So your response is "what can I do about it?"!

Well you could tell your friends and see if they laugh!

Well you can read the facts at and take it a bit more serious or maybe you just don't care!

A very small world, I just wish people would be more concerned about their health rather than war.

Sorry, I did not see the other thread, before starting this.

My next door neighbours have just gone to China for a holiday, unfortunately just before they left they discovered that the city they are visiting is where the outbreak of SARS started! The day before they left they had a phone call from their travel agent to say that they had been moved to another hotel, when they asked why they were told that their original hotel had been identified as a probable source of the SARS outbreak!!

It's a small and scarey world!

Hyper al

You're right, if SARS starts spreading rapidly across the globe, combined with the war on Iraq, it could have serious consequences for airlines and travel companies.

Does this type of news not concern anyone on this BB?

Could a global epidemic like this have an impact on share prices? I would have thought people investing on travel or airlines could be hit! or is everyone thinking that its just 500 people, well it could be 10,000+ next week and watch the death toll rise (the disease has a 4% mortality rate with about 20% of cases needing intensive care), this disease has only been recorded since February 1st 2003!

Oh well, I suppose we can't do anything about it, so why talk about it.

I think it's about time this story got more media coverage, before it gets out of control.
