IC tip by simon thompson i think!? Companies editor Simon Thompson has run the rule over the small cap sector once again and come up with another promising investment idea, this time he has alighted upon a software company which has been around for almost thirty years but is seeing its current prospects being transformed by the boom in e-commerce and applications for retailers. What's more, Simon believes the shares are set to break a key resistance level and head upwards.

Well I actually decided to lock into my 3-fold profit here and sold up given the yield is only 3% and the pension deficit which will most likely be circa £5m next time around. Given the worsening economic outlook, I just feel there are better and safer opportunities, but my judgement is undoubtedly impacted by me not wanting to see an excellent profit drift downwards. Overall, difficult not to take the profit on the table given the weak markets and invest in something like a great global investment trust with an almost guaranteed yield in excess of this and on a discount. I will keep watching though and may get back in on weakness. I think Sanderson have an excellent management team and have done really well to get the business back into shape following taking on too much debt. Despite the recession, they are really well placed to now take the business forward.

Those questions could relate to any company not just this one. Sanderson is going in the right direction.

Yes, strong yes and negative...in my view but 3 has been negative for some time. The management team are "top-drawer" and will make the most of the opportunity!

IMO this is a judgement call situation. Analysis wont really give you answers. The questions are : 1) Are online sales, e/m commerce, businesses to be invested in now ? 2) Are the Board of Sanderson competent to exploit any opportunities ? And a subsidiary question : 3) What impact may the global economy have on Sanderson's prospects ? A real mix of micro/macro business and timing issues.

positive trading update www.investegate.co.uk/Article.aspx?id=201204300700223151C "At the half year stage, trading results for the Group's continuing operations, excluding Sanderson RBS, will show revenue in excess of £6 million and profit from operating activities of approximately £0.8 million, being some six per cent ahead of the comparable period to 31st March 2011. Sanderson continues to invest in products and services across both of its manufacturing and multi-channel businesses. Overall order intake was up by around 10 per cent during the period and at 31st March 2012, the value of the order book had increased by over 30 per cent since the previous year end of 30th September 2011. The order intake in the Sanderson ecommerce software business, which addresses the fast growing market for online, catalogue and internet sales, was ahead over 25 per cent compared with the same period in 2011."
