does sainsbury own any property outright? they have 6.3 billion debt which is chunky - i'm checking if they have solid property to buttress their balance sheet?

Also, i've been noting that directors have been selling at least half their free shares? That's not exactly bullish is it - do directors really need to sell half of that to cover taxes? And what is this - getting shares for free!!? That's not great for shareholders and not much of an incentive. Shouldn't it be options that can be exercised at a certain price?

Exactly PJ

Fat controller Bailey needs to hike the central bank interest rate on Thursday or Sterling will make new ALL time lows and further importing inflation.

It's no wonder British companies are being taken over by foreigners and private equity

ASDA, Morrisons....

Daniel Kretinsky 10% Sainsburys

My wet dream is for Metro international wholesaler (40% owned by Kretinsky), to merge with Sainsburys just like Tescos/Booker. Metro has no presence in the UK and the second largest supermarket chain would provide a huge market for foreign suppliers

High inflation expectations...

Folks to run into shops to buy stuff while old prices last

As Lidl says "When it's gone , it's gone"

High inflation expectations...

Cue Rail strikes and lots more as workers chase inflation and government money printing. It's a nightmare to control but supermarkets are a great cash flow business and people have to eat.

What leaves me a bit baffled is that SBRY have presumably spent a lot of time, effort, & presumably money, building a basic range of foodstuffs which is the cheapest, bar none, yet they seem to keep it a secret!!

-basics such as sliced bread, pasta, porridge, tinned toms, baked beans.....

Obv a lot of advertising dosh behind the small number of lines that are price matched

Rapid food delivery primed to be the next victim of the ‘tech wreck’

After years of zero interest rate policy when anything could be possible to drive speculative manias, maybe some relief for Tescos and Sainsburys as reality hits private equity's more hairbrained investments

Hard to believe that Just Eat got to a valuation of £19 Billion on ZERO profits.... to be precise, 4.5 billion Euros revenue and 1 billion Euro losses.

Deliveroo is another pile of City poo .....ZERO profits

How much to fill an online grocery van with diesel ?

Page 161 and note 32 of annual report for fuel numbers
The Group uses a combination of purchasing agreements and financial derivatives
to hedge fuel exposures on a layered basis using contracts for difference. See note 32 for derivative disclosures.

similar thoughts to you NYB, tho' it may take years...(unsure!) - but the dividend is useful and generous while we stick it out. my average price is 2.35 and I'm comfortable holding. bought some more tesco today also. read a great article in the economist last week about how different the US supermarket sector is to the UK. my interpretation is that there is no genuine read across in the crashing share prices of Walmart and Target for the two major quoted stores here.
