It is high time that the UK government imposes a digital tax on American tech giants. It is unfair that Sainsburys/Argos is not on a level playing field with Amazon. The government is suffering inertia in rectifying this anomaly. They should wake up as this is an additional means of raising money in our hard pressed economy.

Yesterday I used ChopChop. It's the modern equivalent of the corner shop - prices are highish, range is limited, but my word it's useful if you're in a bind! As standard online delivery orders have to be made several days ahead nowadays it's easier to run out of things than it was, so ChopChop could prove quite useful. I don't see it becoming a significant element of the business, though.

chopchop App is still in roll out phase. It does inner London but outer London is not yet done.... Nor Surrey. I suspect its got a long way to go - but it does look good!

Yes it's a novel idea the customer actually covering (some?) of the cost of delivering their order.

I do like the fact you have to pay a FEE that is good idea!

The order goes straight to the local store who pick it then they contact local curriers who deliver it by bike or car.

Yes will be interesting to see the affect of online on overall profits as if as I and many others suspect its borderline profitable/loss making then they must be taking a hit somewhere,I think they try and hide the real cost in the figures.

spod: I agree - but so what? its bumper profits and online "booming" will be the headline. I cant see this ending anyway apart from share price rising ..... At some point!

But obviously i have no idea which specific month but i'm confident it will be within months.

I predict profits this year lower than last year

actual profit, not adjusted profit

because around 40% of grocery sales are now online up from around 15-20% previously i think

and the concensus is that there is no profit in online grocery

so overall margins should theoretically be headed lower

anyone agree ?

Agree about Argos.Probably the one good thing Coupe did buying them.Their same day delivery/collection and low cost model already sits well in the new retail environment and it benefits from other stores being closed due to Covid.

spod: I Dont disagree but I dont care - the rising tide raises all boats - All supermarkets in UK mobbed. I cant see any ending to this story that does not end up with Sainsburys making bumper profits this year.

Sainsburys has added advantage of ARGOS being about the only toy shop open in the UK (you pay online and pick up in the store)

Shouldn't Sainsbury's be putting the customers who make the business a profit, ahead of the ones who make the business a loss ?

Please discuss. Lol

Hardly any meat in my local Sainsburys this morn at 6am open

certainly no Fresh Turkey available

I guess the online shoppers have it tucked away somewhere

I'm sure Tesco will have some, when I go there instead

Also ... anyone who thinks this new strain of the virus is not already circulating throughout the whole of Europe, is clearly a very special fruit and nut job.
