Funny how the short sellers can crash an share price 20% in 2 days on the back of no news or update. Funny or criminal? I favour the latter.

I notice that SAGA are beginning to appear on comparison sites. If they do mix it with the cheepies, their reputation should get them the business. I have just had to cancel a short break as a close relative died suddenly two days before departure. Total claim only just over £1000 but my insurer tried the most devious of stunts to reduce/avoid it. In the end I took it to the small claims court with immediate result. The offer of £200 to cover costs from their complaints procedure by way of apology has yet to arrive. I would pay a SAGA premium next renewal time to avoid this - well known - crowd.

Lots of biggish words they use...what do they mean...

As a first step, we are announcing the launch of a new approach to Insurance. This focuses on direct channels and products that offer attractive innovative features, moving the conversation from price to value. Our new three-year fixed price insurance offering is a powerful indication of our change in approach.

Just paid £140 travel insurance to a provider for a Canada trip, including £1m medical cover. Saga was quoting many times this amount for exactly same cover. If this is typical of how they do business, no wonder they're doing so badly.

I understand that fuel costs are a significant proportion of overheads with cruise companies.
Oil price rises, shares in cruise companies fall.

It is vital that they buy new ships with lean, clean power, quiet, power plants.

That is what they have done.
Also application of latest technology can reduce staff numbers, another significant overhead.

The insurance game is as we know, 'commoditised', but the advantage of the insurance game is positive cash flow.
This 'float' receiving premiums ahead of any payouts is why Warren Buffett is heavily into insurance.
He invests the float.

I believe it's the first time they have not acquired a ship in the secondhand Market? Nothing of this size before.

Saga have run a cruise business for some time so one hopes they know what they are doing though my faith in the management is minimal. Its not hard to do a bit of research - Saga Pearl was built in 81 so its lifetime has been about 37 years. Write that off over 20 years seems sensible as Mike suggested.

Bit of a falling knife here - I think the management are incompetant - I sold at a loss on the profits warning. If anyone is tempted to catch the falling knife I'd wait for 3 consecutive days where the share price doesn't fall. May not get the bottom but this is only heading one way at the moment.

Don't think Saga have really reassured investors on the cruise ship revenue numbers. Seems plotting a cashflow into the future is a bit unknowable. You cut it down to your own accounting experience, what happens to the farmer with the" brand new combine harvester" or the haulier with a fleet of new lorries. Well usually horrendous up from losses and debt problems down the line when the extra revenue fails to keep up with the cost of bling.

No experience of scaling up what doesn't work in a small business to a Saga size, so my fears might be unfounded.

I guess the buccaneering spirit of adventure Saga have shown is good for the world economy in the short term, shouldn't knock it.

Mike wonder how much equity saga has in each spv? I’m assuming if cost is £300m can they get away with less than 20%? If 20% so £60m then cash yield to equity is not great - 10% - and doesn’t compensate for risk even allowing for residual value which is pretty much a guess and so far in the future that’s it’s probably not with the extra spreadsheet column.

The new ships look state of the art.
Engines are bound to be fuel efficient and environmentally friendly.
Same with everything else, including catering facilities.
Note the shape of the hull, capable of the more interesting, no morons allowed, cold water cruises.

Unlike the large fine weather only ships housing thousands, a nightmare vision for many.

Cruise ships are similar to modern passenger aircraft.
Operators have to buy the latest to keep running costs down and customer satisfaction up.
