thanks for clarification Yessir. Sounds like a share placing shafts the small investor, diluting their current holding without the chance to average down ?

Shore Capital analysts said in a client note that they "struggle to see how the 2013 final dividend can survive and now assume a 4.5p dividend for 2014, a 30% cut from prior forecasts". That would make for the lowest distribution since 2007.
"Our preference is for the UK legacy units to be the focus of disposals, resulting in a possible hit to NAV [net asset value] but freeing up significant capital," Shore Capital analyst Eamonn Flanagan wrote. "In our view, a disposal of the Emerging Markets units would be akin to 'selling the family silver', [and] a sale of either Scandinavia or Canada would be 'selling the family gold."

You wouldn't get any shares in a placing unlike a rights issue where you could buy shares at a ratio to shares you already own

There are various links and slightly differing figures but here is one:

Also apparently 2007 was pretty much due to one big storm, this time, weeks and weeks of them, etc, so bad but statistically not that bad!

Uppompeii - No offence taken, I didn't interpret your comment in anyway as belittling. I am just somewhat astonished at the figure of 5,500, particularly as according to the Environment Agency, over 1,000 homes along the Thames alone have been evacuated. Anyway, I hope you are correct ;)

ianood - I wasn't belittling the impact of where this is happening but the floods in 2007 hit 55000 properties, far greater than the 5500 or so currently. It is the duration that is different this time. From a purely financial view the impact shouldn't be as great for insurers.

ps I live at 2.1m above sea level next to a tidal river 10 miles from the coast in Norfolk so was affected by the surge in December so my comments aren't made with a lack of sympathy.

I think some people are forgetting that these flooded areas are pretty much uninsurable in the sense that the costs to insure are astronomical so many don't bother paying the premiums ....

Annoyed I missed the Sunday Times report a week ago .. but this is a sit on the sidelines .. wait for the placing price and top up a few percent below ...

uppompeii - you must be wearing rose coloured glasses! I have lived in the Thames valley for 30+ years and this is the worst yet.

Nowhere near as many properties flooded as a few years ago, impact will be less.

Floods to cost a fortune, I see RSA set up a mobile office to cope with claims in one town.

agreed Yessir, I have read various articles where the figure they need to raise is around £500m. I think a RI is pretty much nailed on as I can't think of another way they can raise that amount of capital, except selling assets, which will hit future earnings and dividends. Weather related losses don't worry me, the company will simply increase premiums. I suspect the share price will be under pressure until results, probably fall sub 90p. Sub 80p once RI announced and shares offered to investors around 45-50p mark. Once recapitalised share price should recover. I'm holding long term current average 118p and RSA is my biggest holding.
