08/5/2017 11:47 | The unions are not stupid. They know that RMG will not be able to contribute more that the current £400m p.a.going forward. In view of the competition and the decline in mail, even that may be too high. Hoping this will be resolved without industrial action. The replacement scheme will almost certainly be generous. | careful

02/5/2017 12:35 | Compare that 65p with the rest of the world and then you'll know what a bargain it is. However, that low revenue in itself requires RMG to keep its costs under control else it ends up as a higher cost to the consumer | joe say
02/5/2017 10:44 | Really? Since the EU opened up the postal service to competition 10 years ago the cost of a first class stamp has gone from 26p to 65p. You only get to choose the courier with the lowest price but if all are over priced the public get fleeced. | encarter
02/5/2017 08:07 | Picks the pocket of the general public - are you having a laugh? Joe public shops at Amazon and ebay etc as they can get a bargain - they also hunt the cheapest deal by and large for not only postage, but general shopping etc How does inflating the pay cost help that? | joe say
02/5/2017 08:03 | Why should employees pay and conditions get worse each year? Unions everywhere need to be tougher and fight harder for workers rights. There's too much inequality in society and it really needs sorting out. The workers at competitors should be getting the same deal as Royal Mail staff instead of this race to the bottom. Which only makes things cheaper for big business so that they can make more profit and picks the pocket of the general public. Anyway Royal Mail won't be allowed to fail, who will deliver your letters at a loss like they do? | encarter
01/5/2017 22:59 | If they're forced into working at a competitor, then there'll be no harm in causing the company maximum damage. In fact, if they're going to end up working for a competitor then the more long term damage to Royal Mail's business the better. Poor management to get into such a crazy situation. | cancun tango
01/5/2017 20:20 | The point is royal mail has to compete with the likes of Hermes and others so it cannot afford to offer vastly more generous package than those offered by its competitors and to be still in business. At the end of the day if it cannot be in business, the royal mail employee will not have a job or will have a job on the terms offered by royal mail's competitors. The union and the royal mail management should be both sensible to meet in the middle ground which will be int he best possible interest for both sides. | riskvsreward
01/5/2017 20:14 | It's not just a pensions issue. They want a pay rise and a 35 hour week. | encarter
01/5/2017 10:53 | £4 will break next week. The unions will destroy this company. Target 3 quid. | spoole5
01/5/2017 09:52 | I agree. The whole pension issue is a scam anyway. It has a massive surplus and the markets are booming. Royal mail offered the trustee an extra £50m a year for the pension which the trustee decline saying additional funding was not needed. The other argument i hear is that employee numbers are declining due to technology, which is true. But the money they have saved on wages easily offsets any additional pensions contributions .Its really just an exercise in screwing the workers . | encarter
30/4/2017 18:48 | encarter 28 Apr '17 - 08:31 - 8213 of 8216 2 0 Royal mail can keep the scheme open, they just need to pay more in but they choose instead to pay profits to shareholders. It isn't a difficult one as far as i am concerned. You look after your staff before 'well off' shareholders !. | tenapen
30/4/2017 17:31 | The 1970's style union could ruin this company, it's a pity because they are doing all the right things, expanding in the US and Europe. They either go to war with the union and face a summer of strikes which will lose business to the increasing competition, or they cave in to demands which will severely impact profitability and reduce the amount to invest in the business and payout to shareholders. It also calls into question the ability to push through reforms to working practices to make the company more efficient. The share price will end up being forced down so low that someone will end up taking it over for the property assets and strip it bare. Be careful what you wish for. | spoole5
28/4/2017 19:26 | I guess a strike will end up with people loosing jobs its not the 70s | ccraig69

28/4/2017 08:31 | Royal mail can keep the scheme open, they just need to pay more in but they choose instead to pay profits to shareholders. Regardless, the CWU is about to call a strike which will last several months and decimate the share price. | encarter
27/4/2017 16:50 | :-( I agree. I don't vote for any of them, but i did agree with the liberal leaders verdict of the labour opposition. Cheers. | tenapen

27/4/2017 14:05 | No, not at all, in fact I thought he was dead! I just googled him and that is what turned up. Interestingly, he is also in favour of 'hard' Brexit - if one believes the papers that is. What I don't doubt however, is that he is a hypocrite like most socialists. | oiht
