montyhedge,

I can see from your post that you don't quite understand finance. If they pay a "special dividend" of £25bn that is cash gone from the company forever.

By buying back shares (Lets say and average price of (£25.5 + £17.85) /2 = £21.68 ave.

£25bn / 21.68 = 1153136531 shares for cancellation.

Assuming the dividend does not increase this will save divi payments of around £1.67bn for EVERY year the company is in existence.

15 years and they will have saved the £25bn cost and the rest of their existence is profit. This is good business.

Failing to do the buy backs means every time the company issues a dividend shareholders are suffering dilution to their holding due to the scrip divis.

It aint rocket science and, despite your endless posts, it is an extremely beneficial use of cash. (Even if it is effectively "borrowed")

"To be precise it was 1279p, but I'm going by todays date 2016, it was all over the place."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why on earth would you go by todays date and say that is the 2016 low? That makes no sense whatsoever!

The average temperature for 2016 was probably around -3 degrees C working on your logic!

Monty, you're like a broken record, you just keep repeating the same posts and points of view over and over again. Zero value poster imo who always gets his figures wrong. What is it they say about empty vessels?

Exxon 10 year low, I reckon we could see this 2016 low of 1525p, if Coronavirus spreads more, 1775p was my first target.

Tenerife and Austria now have Coronavirus victims, I reckon if just one case in US, then Dow would be down another 1000 points.

No dividend cut imo. Company buying back (not that I advocate such practice) even more shares at this depressed level and the dividend is becoming even better covered.

Must admit boys can't see this obsession with dividend, I remember at 2575p posters saying great yield, then lose 35% of capital.
