10% in a single day.
things looking up.
Pratt's having to pay compensation to customers for problems with its mega selling geared fan is interesting.
RR. should have a geared fan engine ready by 2025, not that far away in this game.
long term promising.

This share has come along way on the back of analyst upgrades more than reporting and trading updates from the business. In otherwards the recovery expectation is very high and perhaps - perhaps - the share price is ahead of the game. Profit taking is happening for safety. I sold 50% of my holding a week or so ago. Will buy back in when share price and company present an opportunity.

Some encouraging comments for RR ahead of interims next week (Tues)

China Airlines chairman Nuan-shuan Ho says the A350-900 has "not only met, but exceeded our expectations at every level", including fuel consumption, comfort and operational efficiency.

Bregier puts the A350 operational reliability rate at 99%. Fourteen customers currently operate the twinjet type, which has accumulated total orders for 847 aircraft.

Airbus is intending to deliver the first example of the larger -1000 variant before the end of this year. This aircraft, like the first -900, will go to Qatar Airways.

Now for the bad news:
Thai Airways International has grounded part of its Boeing 787-8 fleet owing to turbine replacement issues with the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine.

The carrier says it is working with Rolls-Royce on the issue, which it expects to be sorted out by September.

"Due to the shortage of Boeing 787 Dreamliner engine spare parts, it is necessary that some aircraft of this type must be parked and temporarily cannot be operated, which is a problem that affects Thai and other airlines worldwide whose 787 aircraft are equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines that have turbine blade problems," says Thai's acting president, Usanee Sangsingkoo, in a statement.

She adds: "As this problem may affect flight safety, Thai has removed these engines from its aircraft and sent them for repair at the Rolls-Royce technical maintenance center in Singapore earlier this year."

The Star Alliance carrier has also conducted negotiations with R-R to obtain compensation expenses accruing from the issue.

When contacted by FlightGlobal, R-R said it is working to resolve Trent 1000 issues.

“This is the continuation of work which started last year to upgrade Trent 1000 engines to the latest standard," says R-R.

BOC Aviation has placed an order for four Boeing 787-9s and will be leased to Spanish carrier Air Europa.

The Singapore-based lessor says in a statement that the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000-powered aircraft will be delivered in 2019. At list prices, the order is valued at $1.08 billion.

“We are delighted to add the Rolls-Royce powered Boeing 787-9 aircraft to our portfolio. This order is the company’s first for a Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine, demonstrating our confidence in these fuel-efficient engines that deliver impressive performance,” says BOC Aviation managing director and chief executive Robert Martin.

Forwards of the fan, some panelling came loose. Naturally, this shouldn't happen.

Query the time since the previous maintenance/inspection?

video and still pictures: the fan is intact. It’s the inlet cowl (upstream of the fan) which was damaged.

hxxp://www.smh.com.au/business/aviation/midair-emergency-forces-china-eastern-flight-to-return-to-sydney-20170611-gwp359.html

A very similar-looking incident from a month ago, also with a Trent 700:

hxxps://theworldofaviationblog.wordpress.com/2017/05/17/egypt-air-airbus-a330-suffers-uncontained-engine-failure-on-takeoff-roll/

Unfortunately, the headline on that one says “uncontained failure” which is wrong. The phrase "uncontained" is used when some high-speed (i.e. dangerous) debris comes out from the internal parts of the engine. Engines are designed so that there is never any uncontained failure. They are tested so that even if a (massive) fan blade comes off, no parts escape and everything is contained within the engine.

It looks as if the main structure of the engine is intact, so it would have continued running. It is some panelling (forward of the engine proper) which came loose.

There would have been noise because the acoustic panelling was then missing, and temporary noise as bits of the panel were (presumably) chewed up by the fan.
