Rio Tinto defends Mongolian expansion amid legal spat

Rio Tinto strongly refuted claims that any agreements relating to its $5.3bn Oyu Tolgoi underground copper mine in Mongolia are illegal.


The FTSE 100-listed mining giant's strongly worded response follows reports that the Administrative Court of first instance has upheld claims by that due process was not followed by the Mongolian government when finalising mine development and funding plans.

The court's formal written ruling is expected to be released in the coming weeks.

Legal proceedings were initiated by the Darkhan Mongol Nogoon Negdel Non-Governmental Organization, a local group that advocates for ecological balance and economic independence.

Rio Tinto, which is not directly involved in the lawsuit, said its plans had adhered to regulations and added that the mine has given rise to significant long-term benefits to the people of Mongolia.

Shares of Rio Tinto were up by 1.36% at 4,223.00p at 1523 GMT.

Rio Tinto PLC (RIO.LN) said Tuesday that it faces a lawsuit in an administrative court in Mongolia over its Oyu Tolgoi project, and that it refuted any suggestion that a development and financing plan or any of the foundational agreements for the mine are illegal.

The mining giant said early reports suggest the Administrative Court of first instance has upheld claims by non-governmental organization Darkhan Mongol Nogoon Negdel that due process wasn't followed by the government of Mongolia in finalizing the plan. The court's formal written ruling is expected to be released in the coming weeks, Rio Tinto said.

The lawsuit was started by the NGO and relates to the government of Mongolia's process in finalizing the Oyu Tolgoi underground mine development and financing plan, Rio Tinto said.

I’m very drunk and buzzing after that Irish lottery contribution to my wife and I, I have gave my wife her share but I’m invested mine into Rio at any cost on an online buy order at best from tomorrow open and I don’t even care what price it triggers at.

I just came into some money from the Irish lottery and I’ve set a buy order with Rio at any cost, that’s how confident I am with Rio Tinto! I expect to buy at under £42

Bit of downfall on Vale if you ask me, I doubt your see Rio follow suit, so that’s another plus for RIO, the management are not as stupid as Vale.
