Emailed FD the other day, got a prompt reply.

Will not post his email but I asked why no RNS with contract wins...answered that most contracts are confidential nature and cannot be announced.

Also asked when next update...answer July.

Also said I thought shareprice left company open to takeover and views ont this.....Answer nothing...totally omitted from his reply !!!

Still think this will be taken out short term...mergers and takevers are now flavour of the month.

Good luck

I could see one bigish buy, 10,000 shares or something like that.

I notice the number of shares is pretty much a round number, 49.44.
That's almost 50m. What that means, is that psychological boundaries for market cap. and for share price, like £100m and £2 per share coincide, as near as darn it.

The ACEA 2008 rules mean to me that manufacturers will be pushing out work to companies like Ricardo to try to meet the requirements, and what is holding the price back, is the psychological barriers. When its been below £2 the optimists have been buying, and when its been above £2 the pessimists have been selling.

The graph shows some clear plateaus around some of these mind figures, like £2.40 and £2.60 as different factions had momentary control over the fight for £2.50.

There are other plateaus at £3.10 and £3.90. These were an unsuccessful attempt to remain above £3, and a failure to breach £4.

From the ACEA by-2008 work that need to be done, I imagine RCDO will rise and start knocking on £2.50 (MC 125m). That means my prediction on another site that Antonov would overtake Ricardo within a year may have been a tad optimistic, as I was basing it on Antonov having a MC of about £100m at the end of the year.

I think you'll find that consultancy services will increase as a result of the required fuel efficincy required for ACEA by-2008 vehicles, so institutions are maybe well off in big FTSE companies like Recardo where they can make a few percent: but for small investors which can buy without moving the price its a different story.

Antonov see their competitor as Torotrak for anything outside the small car category and see the small car category as being theirs. In that sense, small cars are the lower 25,000,000 of annual sales.

'HyTrans' leads the way in improving delivery vehicle fuel consumption and CO2 emissions

Ricardo today formally launched its £1.2 million HyTrans project which it will carry out in partnership with Ford Motor Company, Valeo SA and the Gates Corporation. The project aims to demonstrate technologies for an affordable and production-feasible micro-hybrid diesel delivery vehicle based on the existing Ford Transit. In what will be Europe's first micro-hybrid delivery van, the partners expect to achieve a 15-25 per cent improvement in fuel consumption over typical door-to-door, real world local delivery cycles.

The HyTrans project is expected to take approximately one year to complete and to lead to a demonstrator vehicle based on a Ford Transit which will:

Have fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of around 15-25 per cent better than current production vehicles based on an urban delivery cycle featuring frequent stop/starts
Be of comparable performance and driveability to current products
Represent an 'affordable' engineering solution which has the potential for implementation in products
Have an uncompromised package with no reduction in payload capacity or space

To achieve a significant reduction in fuel consumption under driving conditions with frequent stops typical of a local delivery van, the HyTrans vehicle will include an automatic engine stop/start capability together with a regenerative braking system which will capture valuable energy that would otherwise be lost during braking. An advanced energy management supervisory control system will ensure the optimum use of Ford's latest 2.0-litre common rail 92kW (125PS) diesel engine and Valeo belt-driven combined starter-alternator system which Ford refers to as an Integrated Starter Generator System (ISG).

"With the technologies envisaged for the HyTrans demonstrator we anticipate being able to achieve an improvement in fuel consumption in the region of 15 and 25 per cent based on urban stop/start", said Ricardo technology director, Neville Jackson. "We also expect an overall improvement of approximately 5 per cent over the New European Drive Cycle."

Ricardo is the HyTrans project leader and has responsibilities for vehicle modelling, control system design and integration of the micro-hybrid system. Specific tasks include:

Concept evaluation, including simulation of hardware options, performance and fuel consumption over both European and urban delivery drive cycles
Advanced supervisory control system implementation to minimise fuel consumption
Electrical system architecture and layout
Vehicle layout, thermal studies and refinement
Packaging and vehicle build
Calibration and shakedown testing

The bulk of the research and development work will be undertaken at Ricardo's technology centre at Shoreham, UK.

Ford's role is to supply the baseline vehicle, which has been built at the company's Southampton plant. Ford will test the vehicle at its European research and advanced engineering centre at Aachen, Germany, based on a developed urban delivery drive cycle representative of real world measured driving schedules. Ford will also input into a high level Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) of the micro-hybrid concept.

Valeo's role in the programme is to supply the belt-driven, combined starter-alternator system including the electrical machine and the power electronics, as well as DC-DC converter and Battery Management and Disconnect Unit (BMDU). The Tier 1 supplier will also provide baseline component specifications, performance and packaging data for the electrical components as well as engineering support for the electrical systems, control strategy and systems integration in addition to a sub-system FMEA study.

Gates' role is the design and supply of a belt-drive system, based on the company's Electro-Mechanical Drive (EMD) technology which employs new, high load capacity belts and a tensioner design able to deal with the unique demands of these systems. The component supplier will also provide a sub-system FMEA study.

The HyTrans project is jointly funded by the project partners who between them are meeting half of the costs in the form of materials and engineering resources, with matching funds provided by the UK Department for Transport. The Energy Saving Trust will administer this funding by providing grants through its TransportEnergy New Vehicle Technology Fund. The HyTrans project was formally announced today by David Jamieson MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, during a visit to Ford's Southampton Transit van assembly plant.

Notes to Editors:

Ricardo defines a 'micro' hybrid as being a vehicle in which an electric machine is used for applications such as stop/start and regenerative braking but is not used to supply additional torque when the engine is running. A 'mild' hybrid is defined as being when the electric machine is also able to provide up to 10 per cent of the maximum engine power in the form of additional torque. A 'full' hybrid is defined as being one in which the electric motor typically provides around 40 per cent of the maximum engine power as additional torque.

With technical centres in the UK, USA, Germany and the Czech Republic, Ricardo is a leading independent technology provider and strategic consultant to the world's automotive industries. The company's engineering expertise ranges from vehicle systems integration, controls, electronics and software development, to the latest driveline and transmission systems and gasoline, diesel, hybrid and fuel cell powertrain technologies. Its customers include the world's major vehicle, engine and transmission manufacturers, tier 1 suppliers and leading motorsport teams. Ricardo is committed to excellence and industry leadership in people, technology and knowledge; approximately 70 per cent of its employees are highly qualified multi-disciplined professional engineers and technicians. A public company, Ricardo plc posted sales of £137 million in fiscal year 2003 and is a constituent of the FTSE techMark 100 index – a group of innovative technology companies listed on the London Stock Exchange.

I wasn't too sure about that, but I notice that the shares are showing xd on the monitor now. Also i'm not a big fan of waiting for dividends because short term the price drops by the same amount as the dividend, so it's only really worth it for long term holders. I hope it goes up for you (it probably will now that i'm out!)

Can anybody say anything useful about Christopher Ross who has just been appointed by Antonov PLC? Its clear he was once CEO of Ricardo. Is he old and on his way down, or on his way to an easier life, or what?

Antonov's Board has been further strengthened by the appointment of Christopher Ross as a Non Executive Director. Christopher is currently Deputy Chairman of Manganese Bronze plc and a Non-Executive Director of Carclo Plc, both UK listed automotive sector companies. Previously, he was Chief Executive of Ricardo plc. He is widely credited in the automotive industry for having transformed Ricardo into the world's No. 1 powertrain design and development business

The recent sell-off has been on pretty small volumes, but what is clear beyond doubt is that this share has not necessarily bottomed (witness the recent retreat from the 100 EMA). The recent price action is telling those that are prepared to listen that the market remains to be convinced that a recovery is under way. RCDO is a good company, but one that faces some difficult short term challanges. I am still not buying but DYOR.
