21/4/2018 14:31 | Gomshall Mill named best pub in Surrey The pub could now win the national title in The National Pub & Bar Awards 2018 The pub is part of the Home Counties pubs company, a sister company of Brunning and Price. A pub with a river running through it has been named the best in Surrey in a national competition. Gomshall Mill scooped the accolade in the National Pub & Bar Awards 2018, when the county winners were announced on Friday (April 13). The historic pub is set in a building dating back to the 17th century and sits on the banks of the River Tillingbourne in Gomshall. The little river runs right through the building, which used to be a mill, and you can still see the waterwheel inside. General manager Andy Wagstaff reflected on why Gomshall Mill is loved by its customers. He said: "We are a pub first, but we are a pub that does very good food so we do appeal to a lot of people." The menu features dishes which change every six weeks and is created in-house by head chef Sergio Almeida. Andy said: "He is really passionate about food. There is absolute passion flowing from him. He really knows and loves his food." As well as a menu which attracts tourists and diners from all around the region looking for a meal out, the pub has created a loyal following among villagers. It has plenty of nooks and crannies to hide in and outside there is a beautiful garden where you can eat and drink on the riverbank. Gomshall Mill also won the best pub category at Guildford in Bloom two years in a row in 2016 and 2017. Andy said: "There is so much history here. Gomshall Mill appeared in the Domesday Book." Andy hopes to spruce up the pub, which is part of the Home Counties pubs company, a sister company of Brunning and Price. He explained: "Our future plan is to tidy it up but very sympathetically and bring it back to a very high standard. "Don't get me wrong, it is a very beautiful building. But like all these things it has wear and tear because it is a very busy place. Gomshall Mill is one of 94 pubs and bars to win the title of best pub in their county, and they will officially be crowned at a red carpet celebration in London on May 23. At the grand final Gomshall Mill will also hear if it is to be one of 15 regional winners or even the overall National Pub & Bar of the Year in the competition, which is run by trade magazine Pub & Bar. Staff from the pubs entered online and had to give details about areas such as staff training, investment, food, drinks and marketing. The entries were scrupulously read and judged by the team from Pub & Bar magazine in order to select the 94 county winners, which was combined with their own knowledge of the sites. Visits are already under way to decide which of the 94 will be named the National Pub & Bar of the Year. Tristan O'Hana, editor of Pub & Bar magazine, said: "Each visit that we've made to the Gomshall Mill has been a flawless experience. Obviously, it's a gorgeous pub in an idyllic setting, but once you're inside you realise that it is a seamless operation run by a passionate, dedicated and friendly team. "They clearly care deeply about every element involved in running an on-trade site, so are certainly worthy winners of the Surrey county title." | adobbing

20/4/2018 12:20 | Overall ranking: 17 (new entry) Restaurateur ranking: 4 (new entry) Snapshot Bringing in a new boss from outside the industry is always a gamble, so it’s perhaps appropriate that the board of the Restaurant Group (TRG) found Andy McCue at betting business Paddy Power, where he was chief executive, and put him in the same role at TRG in September 2016. TRG has assembled some of the UK’s best-known casual dining brands across more than 500 outlets, including Frankie & Benny’s, Chiquito, Coast to Coast, and Garfunkel’s, along with around 60 travel concessions, mainly in airports. TRG has recently been underperforming in a very competitive market, reporting like-for-like sales down 3% year on year in the 52 weeks ended 31 December 2017, with turnover down 4.4%. What we think McCue is no stranger to driving organisational change. His growth strategy at Paddy Power delivered record revenues and profits, and played a pivotal role in the merger with Betfair. So when he says that TRG is a work in progress, we should take him at his word. “2017 is a transitional year,” he told the City at the interim results in August last year. “As we make the necessary investments in price to correct for our previously weak value position, and in quality to ensure consistency of our food offer, like-for-like sales and margins will come under inevitable pressure in the short term.” His priorities for TRG include re-establishing competitiveness in leisure-located brands Frankie & Bennie’s and Chiquito in particular, where pricing is seen to have risen faster than comparable brands; improving customer service; and making efficiencies across the business. The £10m in cost savings achieved during 2017 will be reinvested in restaurants. TRG is also planning to grow its pub business beyond its current 60 sites (including the Brunning & Price gastropubs) and its travel concessions arm, both of which have proven more resilient than the core casual dining brands. Key appointments have been made to create what McCue calls a “high-capabili Investment in technology has improved the frequency and accuracy of bookings by integrating online, phone and in-restaurant reservations. Ordering and payment is quicker through use of hand-held terminals, and mobile order-and-pay and click-and-collect apps are being tested at some sites. TRG remains a profitable and, as McCue points out, “a highly cash-generative business, which benefits from significant scale and a diversified portfolio”. The challenges currently facing the casual dining sector will create winners and losers, but with McCue’s clear focus on where the challenges lie, and a strategy under way to address them, it’s hard to see any of his former Paddy Power colleagues betting against him. In a trading update in January 2018, he declared: “While the market has softened, we continue to benefit from strong cash generation and a healthy balance sheet.” | adobbing

08/3/2018 13:45 | Yesterday’s results weren’t bad when you compare the carnage in the food sector. Interpreting today’s results explains why the market “run for the hills”, even though the company is reporting mildly bad news. One bad news is how high the operational leverage is when a 1% drop in sales = 15% drop in profits. The positives are maintaining dividends, producing free cash flow of £60m (rather than the suggested £89m), having a £140m real estate portfolio and debt that equates to 5% of sales. All this is good and shows the quality of the company, but the sector is going through a negative phrase and this negative sentiment will impact the perceptions of good or bad restaurants.
