I didn't actually sell after the March update thinking better of it. So far, market is happy there are no further nasty surprises.

Trading update Revenue for the third quarter ended 31st March 2016 amounted to £109.6m (2015: £145.9m) and cumulative revenue for the nine months to 31st March 2016 was £308.1m, compared with £369.7m for the corresponding period last year. As noted in our half year statement, revenue last year benefitted from a number of large orders in the Far East, which have not been repeated to the same extent this year. Revenue for the nine months at last year's exchange rates would have been £307.6m. After adjusting for these factors, there was underlying growth of 5%. Profit before tax for the third quarter was £20.2m (2015: £53.2m) and cumulative profit before tax up to 31st March 2016 was £46.3m, compared with £109.8m last year. Cash balances at the end of March 2016 were £48.8m (2015: £74.0m), which includes the pension fund escrow account of £15.7m (2015: £15.1m), after year to date capital expenditure of £38.0m. As we published in our trading update in March 2016, we expect full year revenue to be in the range of £420m - £440m and a profit before tax in the range of £67m - £83m.

My last sale was at £19.88 and I thought that was too low, as recent Sp showed. It is now looking good. red

deadly: Very much (imo) depends on your time horizon - One of the better run companies in Europe and USA in my view - A very heavy investor in research to continuously improve the product and the directors have a large enough shareholding to ignore the city fund managers who are looking for short term gains. The boys are going for long term growth and are imo likely to achieve it. OK maybe I am biased having held since 2009 but get a nice dividend of over 8% on cost but could have sold some 20% higher - aint hindsight wonerful !! RSW will never be a short term multibagger but (no investment advice intended - you should be able to rest comfortably)

big article in the FT today about them which was largely positive, lots of talk about the 3d printing business but also talking about a loss making medical division. I have so cash so will be interested to see what tomorrow brings.

Apologies if the following as been posted before, its from Jon Guthrie F.T., dated Jan. 2016.: "Co-founder Sir David McMurtry has decreed information is shared with everyone, or not at all. So Renishaw issues updates rather than nudging analysts’ forecasts around. The share price thus hops about like a Mexican jumping bean on a hotplate. For example, an update that prefigured Thursday’s stunning half-year results lifted the stock 19 per cent in a day this month."

tong. I don't know whether they have a competitive advantage in AM. However, remember that they are world leaders in metrology so any upturn in world manufacturing will generate orders. So, the China conundrum is another negative. apad

ApadVery important point you make whether the company will manage to sustain their competitive advantage in this new area going forward. This also makes me scratch my head and that is why I do value the company a bit more conservatively as a way of dealing with such an uncertainty and my ignorance on the matter. I have cut my sales growth forecasts in half (relative to last 10 years) for the next 5 years and what I do get is an annual expected earnings yield of about 10%. Trailing PE I work out to amount to about 34 (I use average margins over a 10 year cycle as opposed to most recent numbers for earnings) which is rather high and it is one reason why I would expect the share price to drift south for a tad longer.

I increased when it challenged £15 last year. It'd be nice to have the opportunity again. With the current sentiment to all engineering stocks it might well happen again. An rns on large orders would upset the applecart. A backwards PER of 11 and a forwards PER of 18 is driving the trend, but a 2.5% yield should make it a slow drift Large companies are experimenting with additive manufacturing for loaded components (rather than experimental prototype that do not have to last long) and are patenting applications, but it will be a long haul. I still don't know whether RSW have an edge with their machines based on a synergy between metrology and control software, but there is no doubt that a high level of control will be needed for producing microstructures capable of providing service performance in loaded components. apad

Negative relative strength for more than 12 months now. If history is any guide, there should be another 25-30% slide from current levels on the back of current negative sentiment. If so, I wouldn't be too unhappy as it will provide a much better opportunity to top up my stake in what is a sterling quality business.
