Speech by Baroness Neville-Rolfe, Minister of State for Energy and Intellectual Property, at Clean Energy Live, Birmingham NEC And UK enterprise redT has recently supplied 40kWh flow battery systems to E.ON who I met this morning and other UK and international customers. I believe these technologies must be encouraged and supported, so that more of us can benefit from disruptive changes. That is why we will shortly publish a call for evidence on a smart systems routemap, including sections on storage and innovation. We will need your help in choosing the solutions that work best for the industry and for consumers and communities. Full report here....

Centrica project.... this will put storage at forefront, launch the £19 million project which we are largest participant will get rocket going. Even better if they close a few deals, this will certainly help push those pending sales into cash in our bank.

Ch1ck, don't use L2 these days, but I can assume seller cleared.

How come? Energy adviser to FOE Cymru, Neil Crumpton, explains ‘The existing Grid regulations require two circuits in the link, each of which could carry the maximum output of all the wind farms, to avoid lost production if there is a fault in one or other of the circuits. Yet, load-duration data from a group of wind farms in southern Scotland indicates that the farms generate around 95 % of their annual electricity production at below 66% of their maximum output. So for the wind regime in that region a 66 MW circuit from a 100 MW wind farm would still transmit around 95 % of annual production. The wind profile in Mid Wales may well be similar. So the proposed 800 MW or so of wind farms may well be served by 2 x 500 MW links rather than 2 x 1,000 MW links with little loss of production during faults of several weeks a year on one or other circuit. If so, the HVDC hardware and undergrounding cost might be nearly halved.’

FOE Cymru says an energy storage facility at or near the upland sub-station could minimise production losses during a fault by delaying transmission until the wind eases and link capacity becomes available. Storage would also ‘bring wider system benefits in terms of routine demand-responsive supply to Grid and power quality improvements’. The group suggest using vanadium flow cell technology or ABB’s battery system which could scale to 50 MW for an hour or more.

I liked the following bit of the above report - it shows the investment in sales and marketing is starting to pay off

However, RED has 265 tank unit modules in final stages of customer selection, up from 101 indicated only three months ago with the final 2016 results and active customer enquiries increased to €314 million.

Free marketeers might say the Government is doing what the Private sector does best. And shouldn't.Some might say here is a welcome nudge.Have Redt plus the solar guys and these inverters and whatever really already achieved what our government in ignorance is hoping to achieve.I recall what an MD of a British computer company once said, "orders not crutches". Good man eh? Not sure what my own balanced view is yet. Only sure " the switch " is happening.

The price is up a bit because the risk has just lowered a notch. The gov pumping a bit of cash into storage has ensured that.Once the gov have it explained to them that what the country needs isn't more generation but more firm generation with frequency support capabilities, then even more cash will get diverted from intermittent subsidies for windmills and the like, into systems which correct for the deficiencies intermittent generation causes, and storage is part of that.Subsidising floating windmills built by the most expensive country in the world and situated off Scotland, which has electricity coming out of its ears already, is just so stupid only our government would subsidise it.

Dogrunner What make you say that? The bid price is still at 7.75p. Do you have level 2?But I agree we are starting to move.I have reread the last trading statement and it looks very promisingScott McGregor, CEO, commented:"redT, through its determined and patient approach to developing its business, now finds itself positioned at the forefront of the flow energy storage machine sector. Experienced customers now understand the benefits of energy technologies such as redT's flow machine over short-lived power-focussed batteries. As a Company, we are well placed to capitalise as the rest of the market begins to fully understand how to utilise energy storage. The Company is focusing on delivering its key projects this year which include installation of the largest energy storage project in Cornwall, pursuing short term orders and building its orderbook for 2018.

just bought at 8.07p still low given the buy volume - seller must be in the 'dark' market

The competition announced today is to promote British expertise in the is area. There are a lot of new ideas for battery but they are in labs and universities. RedT is 10 years ahead of them in terms of R and D and have contracts and manufacturing in place with some large companies. My only concern is the lack of awareness in the public domain for this technology. RedT should be pushing this in the press a lot more.Still a great time to load up this will be above 12p quite quickly. There must be a substantial overhang of shares to keep the price down with such large news coverage and buying. Quite strange.

Cheers Iglen, I still have reservations about where REDt are in the uptake curve and believe the word 'slow' still presents a problem, however, the market for energy storage - non battery - looks a given to be a disruptive technology and either way, REDt do have a large potential order book which although is not a guarantee, it would be reasonable to conclude that a fair portion of that will convert.
Happy to try a position at sub 8p rather than 10 or 12p anyway.

Can buy well inside the spread still.

Took a few as the 'noise' is mounting re. energy storage. Think the downside is getting priced in here, worth a punt to see how it plays out.

Hope that's not annoyed too many of the rampers on here lol.

I see Sky have picked up on the DM article today so a wider audience. Shame they don't clarify what tech these batteries/machines are likely to use but given our links with this governmental department, you would hope they are fully up to speed with the benefits of vanadium.
